image of overflowing toilet with sewage Overflowing toilets with sewage in Redding, CA can be dangerous to your health. Call SERVPRO of North Shasta to disinfect and santize!

With all the holiday parties filling up your schedule and welcoming the extended family into your home, the holiday season definitely adds extra stress to your sewage pipes. Water damage to your home is devastating, even more so during the holidays, but sewage damage... is a whole different ball game.

Water from a backed-up sewage pipe should be considered dangerous and filled with harmful bacteria. These types of bacteria and viruses that the sewage water carries need professional equipment and trained technicians to properly clean, sanitize, and disinfect the area where the water has touched or seeped and absorbed into.

If you experience backup or overflowing sewage pipes during this busy season, here are a few steps to prevent the spread of germs and keep you and your family safe.

  1. Call the Professionals.
    • SERVPRO of North Shasta has trained water remediation technicians to not only disinfect the area that has been contaminated but also to fully dry the sewage water in areas you may not suspect the water has gone. The presence of moisture alone can cause the growth of mold and wreak havoc in your bathroom or other areas of your house. If you suspect damage to your pipes, call a plumber immediately to inspect the health, age, and possible deterioration of your sewage pipes.
  2. Dry the area
    • If your toilet has overflowed, grab your rubber gloves and start to dry the standing water. This step applies to any flooded area of your home caused by a busted/frozen pipe, broken appliance, or even storm damage. If you have a shop vac, follow the steps to prepare it for water or other liquids, and use it to remove the standing water. Don't have a high-powered vacuum? Grab some towels or a mop and bucket to help dry the water. Next, turn on all ceiling fans, bathroom exhaust fans, or (if available) grab any box fans or high-powered fans to help the drying process.
  3. Sanitize
    • After drying the area, next comes sanitation. Sewage water contains harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins, making it extremely important to sanitize and disinfect every area the water could have touched. For those that have small children, it might be a good idea (once the area has completely dried from the first cleaning) to disinfect it a second time.

Remember, moisture invites mold to grow, sometimes in places that weren't fully dry or where the water crept into that wasn't visible. Depending on the severity of the water damage, having one of our technicians come out with our advanced water detection tool can help with your peace of mind that nothing is growing under the floorboards or within your walls.

Water is a powerful energy source. Hydropower or Hydro energy provides clean energy to cities and towns all over the world. According to USGS Hydropower, represents about 17% of total electricity production. Making water the most important and widely-used renewable source of energy.

However, water is also incredibly dangerous! Heavy rains, leaky pipes, severe storms, and broken appliances could be hazardous to your home or office. SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity, and Greater Tehama Counties has over 26 years of experience with water damage, and you wouldn't believe all of the issues we have seen. So here are 3 tips from our expert technicians to keep your family, yourself, and your home or workplace safe.

  • Turn off the Electricity

After you turn off the water, remember to shut off the power. Whether it's a faulty appliance, heavy rainfall that floods your basement, or a leaky pipe that sends water all over your computer cords, quickly find the circuit breaker, turn off the electricity, and unplug the device. This will help keep you safe when you start the water drying process.

  • Identify your Water
  • When we start to see water flood our home, the first instinct is to clean and dry the water immediately. But did you know that there are several different types of water and levels when it comes to water damage? The IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) is a great source for helping you identify what kind of water and water damage you may have.
    • Category 1: Clean Water
      • Example: Rainwater, faucets, drinking fountain, etc.

Experts say to be careful when identifying water as a level 1 and to assess the cleanliness of the floor. If animal feces or urine is present on the floor, this can quickly upgrade the category to level 2.

  • Category 2: Gray Water
    • Example: Dishwasher, Toilet, Washer Machine, Etc.

Gray water is slightly contaminated and needs a disinfectant to be applied to affected surfaces. Be careful when cleaning grey water to avoid any kind of infection or illness.

  • Category 3: Black Water
    • Example: Toilet overflow with feces or urine, sewer backup, flood waters from rivers or streams, etc.

Highly contaminated, black water can require immediate removal of building materials such as drywall, cabinets, flooring, etc. If you suspect you have black water damage call in the water damage experts, SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity, & Greater Tehama Counties. Our technicians are certified and trained, to remove, clean, and restore your home back to a safe place.

  • Quickly Remove Items.
  • Once you have turned off the electricity and water start removing any objects that aren't permanent. Example: Rugs, furniture, curtains, toys, dog beds, etc.
  • If some of your furniture is too heavy to move try placing foil or plastic under the legs to help keep the water from soaking into the material.

3 Steps to Prevent Water Damage in Your Home During Vacation.

7/8/2022 (Permalink)

image of beach with a drink. Enjoy your vacation by doing these 3 preventative steps to stop any water damage from happening!

Vacations should be the definition of summer. Kids are out of school, teachers are celebrating, and everyone wants to find that special time to relax in the sun. How many of us have a calendar with a giant red circle around the start of our vacation date? You can almost feel the stress melting off as time gets closer. According to one study, after four days of vacation, stress levels begin to lower significantly. Feel free to include that study next time you ask your boss off from work. That study also shows that the effects of vacation can last up to 30 days. Try to remember that fact as we move on.

The leading musty smell in homes is mold growth. Yes, mold smells, and it's a pretty good sign moisture control is needed if you smell it. Mold is a lot like Batman. It creeps in the night and loves dark damp environments. This is why coming home from a seven-day vacation to your dark home, can increase the chances of mold growth and create that special musty smell greeting you as you enter the door. Remember the quotes in elementary school, "He who smelled it, expelled it", "He who detected it, projected it", or "He who denied it, supplied it"? Yea, that applies here. If you smell mold, it probably exists, and finding the root becomes priority number one.

Leaky pipes, faulty appliances, broken AC unit, whatever the cause, water, and moisture is the common cause of Mold growth. Mold not only loves water but organic matter. (Organic matter like flooring, cabinets, walls, and rugs.) Making these prime areas for mold growth when wet. A simple toilet overflow, when not dried and cleaned properly, could be the start of more severe issues. This is a great time to remember the effects of your vacation can last up to 30 days.

We know no one wants to come home to a musty house, water damage, or mold growth, so here are a few steps to follow before leaving on that dreamy vacation.

3 steps to prevent water damage on your extended vacation!

1. Turn off the water in your home.

  • The first step is to find the water main supply to your house and shut off the water. Here is a quick instructional video. Remember to drain all the water from your pipes by turning on the faucets until no further water runs out, and flush toilets to remove excess water from the bowls and tanks.

2. Turn up the temperature, but don't turn off the A/C unit.

  • The rule of thumb is to bump your thermostat up 5 degrees from your normal home temperature. This helps save you money on energy costs and allows your A/C unit to not overwork, creating fewer chances for it to break and cause water damage while you are gone.

3. Set your water heater.

  • Some water heaters have a vacation mode that lowers the temperature several degrees. You can also do this manually before leaving on your vacation. This will help your water heater from cycling on and off so often while you are gone, preventing a potential water leak or spill. Remember it’s not recommended to turn off your water heater.

If you do come back from vacation and find water standing, flooding, or mold growth, give SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity, and Greater Tehama Counties a call. We are the professionals that are trained and certified in water damage and mold remediation in Redding, California. We make sure your home is safe, clean, and dry. Prolong the lower levels of stress from your vacation by allowing us to clean up the water, dry out your organic matter (flooring, cabinets, walls, and rugs), and prevent mold from entering your home.

We help eliminate the stress! Call us today! 530-222-0200!

What a waste! 6 Items to Not Stick Down the Drain.

6/14/2022 (Permalink)

image of a leaky faucet Leaky Faucet in Shasta County, California causing expensive water bill.

One trillion gallons of water are wasted each year by household leaks. It is creating a staggering statistic that has a 93% prevention rate. That's enough water to supply 11 million homes of water for a year. Talk about flushing money down the drain, literally. 2022 has become a year for recovery and managing the aftermath of Covid. Prevention is becoming the keyword, with predictions of gas prices becoming $5.00 per gallon in the United States. With this kind of uncertainty saving money for a rainy day could be as easy as fixing a leaky faucet.

Do you hear dripping sounds hours after turning off your mourning shower? Leaky faucets can waste up to 3,000 gallons per year, adding anywhere from $1.00 to $6.00 more per faucet each month to your water bill. Don't fear! Leaky faucets can be an easy, inexpensive fix. Even the most inexperienced DIYer can follow Home Depot's "How to fix a leaky faucet" instructions and solve your leaky faucet problem.

Don't we wish all plumbing issues were that easy? Having to call a plumber can make even our best days feel gloomy. Damaged Pipes to Natural Disasters water damage costs homeowners up to $20 billion annually.

Bring on the preventative measures to save money!

One of the best preventative measures is taking care of your pipes. Here is a list of things not to stick down your drains.

  1. Oil, Grease, and Fats
  • Google "Fatberg London," and you will never stick another ounce of oil or grease down your drain. Cleanaholics will have nightmares after reading these guys can continue to grow up to 130 tons. Run “the blob” keeps growing!
  1. Coffee Grounds

The clumping begins when you add water to coffee grounds. Meaning every morning coffee and afternoon wake-up coffee will keep growing the clump bigger and bigger until it prohibits the drain from its job.  Your drain may not love coffee grounds, but your garden will.

  1. Egg Shells

Who loves the beach and sliding your feet into the sun-warmed sand? You may love sand at the beach, but you don't want it in your drain, and that's exactly what happens when you stick Egg Shells down the drain. Eggshell particles eventually turn into sand and will cause build-up in your pipes. Potentially leading to pipe corrosion and malfunction of the drain.

  1. Cat Litter

If you don't own a cat, you might not know cat litter absorbs moisture. Flushing cat litter down the drain can cause it to expand and create blockage in your drain. Even washing out your kitties' litter box in your kitchen sink is right up there with putting a ladder on bricks to get a little extra height. You just shouldn't do it!

  1. Flushable Wipes

Take a second before you read the next sentence. They lied to you! Go to any professional plumbing website or even USA today and you will read that no "flushable wipes" should go down the drain. It was hard for us to digest as well. How could something be labeled "flushable" and cause so much damage in the future?

Now that we have gone through the list of what "not to do", here is one thing you can do!

Call SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity, and Greater Tehama Counties next time your preventative measures don't work out, and you can swim in your bathroom or kitchen. We are your local restoration and cleanup company certified in water damage. Call today! We will take you through the water drying process and how to prevent mold or mildew from growing. Air Conditioning Causes Water Damage in Home.

5/23/2022 (Permalink)

image of air conditioner causing water damage in home. Air Conditioner Unit over time causing water damage in Redding, California.

Every morning your routine consists of waking up, grabbing your phone, tuning into your local weather station, and checking the up-and-coming weekend forecast to discover they are forecasting triple digits. According to, "Redding routinely experiences the hottest summer temperatures anywhere in California north of the Mojave Desert."

Does it get that hot? Just ask the locals; escaping the heat becomes a top-list priority when living in Redding, California.

Lakes, Mountains, Beaches, we have them all! Whether you're grabbing a kayak or paddleboard to cool down in the waters of WhiskeyTown Lake. Jumping in the car to hike the nearest mountain, like Mt. Shasta or Mt. Lassen, or making a brief road trip heading to the sandy beaches of Crescent City, the first step is to set your air conditioner to cool. Hoping when you return home, your house has lowered just a few degrees.

Trust us when we say your air conditioner unit will be tested, in a Redding Summer

Have you ever sat down in your favorite chair, laid your head back, and saw a discoloring on your ceiling? What begins with a mild inconvenience of a slightly stained ceiling could potentially ruin your ceilings, walls, and floors. Water damage from your air conditioner could put a damper on your summer plans, so here are a few ways to keep your air conditioner working properly.

  1. Change your filter at least every 30- 60 days.
    • The air filter helps keep dust and debris from entering your HVAC system and potentially clogging it. If a condensate drain line becomes clogged, it will cause condensation to back up and start to leak. A slow leak unattended will eventually cause mold and other water damage to your home's structure.
  • Remove Debris / Clean Fins.
    • Removing debris from your outside HVAC unit will require you to shut off the power. Remove the fan cage, and clean out leaves or debris from the inside.
    • Clean the fins. While the power is still shut off, grab a water hose and spray from the inside out. Wash all of the dirt that might be stuck between the fins.
  • Level the Unit.
    • Keeping your HVAC unit level can help keep stress off the condenser and add longer life to your unit.
  • Replace Damaged Insulation
    • Check the insulation around the cords coming from the system. If it's beginning to crack, replace the insulation to protect the cords from outdoor elements.
  1. Check out this Lowe’s Video on How to Clean an Air Conditioner.

Regular Maintenance checks by professionals such as Wallner Plumbing Heating and Air before the summer season can help discover any issues you might have in the future. Water damage from an AC unit tends to start off small and can potentially end in significant repairs and renovations.

Signs that your AC may have a water leak.

  • Constantly dripping water (even when the unit is turned off).
  • Poor Cooling Performance.
  • Sound of Water or dripping noise within the walls.
  • The drain pan overflows with water when full.
  • Water stains on the ceiling, caused by condensation forming on your air ducts.

There are stories of entire ceilings collapsing because of a consistent water leak, caused by an air conditioning unit. Water damage isn't something you should take.

Ways to Solve Your Flooded Crawl Spaces!

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

image of technician assessing water damage in crawl space. image of a SERVPRO technician in Redding California accessing water damage in a crawl space.

A storm in our neck of the woods brings rejoicing and celebration, with very little thought of the aftermath that heavy rains can bring. If you own a house with a crawl space, this can be potentially a disaster. Heavy rains can cause standing water with the possibility of permanent damage to your home. Leading us to the question …

Why are homes built with crawl spaces?

Building a house isn't cheap. One of the ways to cut costs is not having to level out the dirt and land your house's foundation will be built on. Not to mention crawl spaces create easy access to your HVAC and plumbing lines for future repairs. Making the cost of repairs drop significantly. Unfortunately, there is a downside to crawl spaces. Can we say MOISTURE

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, moisture is the number one issue in having a crawl space. Mold, wood rot, and termites are just a few things that love moisture. So when the heavy rains move out, make a quick check for standing water. This could help prevent your house from looking like Johnny Depp's boat in Pirates of the Caribbean

If you discover standing water in your crawl space,

Step one: would be, QUICKLY remove it. Depending on the amount of water, you may need to call a professional company to bring pumps to extract the water before it causes permanent damage to your home.

Step two: dry out your crawl space. If you are trying this DIY style, you will need to bring in a dehumidifier to help dry things out. NEVER allow the crawl space to air dry if there is significant water. The quality of the dehumidifier does matter to prevent any growth of mold or mildew. Depending on cost and budget, a quick call to your local restoration company could help you save time and reassurance in the quality of work.

When the water is removed, and everything is dry, bring on the preventative measures!

Follow these 4 steps to give yourself the lowest energy bills, and help prevent future damage to your home’s foundation.

  • Seal the vents and openings by installing air-tight vent covers and doors.
  • Install a sump pump. Check out this old house's 8-step DIY sump pump installation process. Warning, this is not an easy process, and we recommend calling the professionals.
  • Install a plastic vapor barrier over your dirt floor and walls.
  • Check your landscaping. Creating a gradual slope that angles away from the house can keep water from draining underneath your home. Your yard needs to slope six to eight inches away from your foundation.

Water damage can be menacing and tiresome, but your local SERVPRO is here to help! We know that all the preventive measures in the world can't always protect you from the unknown, and that is why our technicians are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Overflowing Toilet Caused Water Damage. Now What?

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

water damage from overflowing toilet Water Damage caused by an overflowing toilet, causing mold and other bacteria to grow in Redding, CA.

Whether it began with tree roots in your pipes, an overzealous child that loves toilet paper, or a dinosaur that just needed to find a watering hole, an overflowing toilet can cause water damage and be a potential health hazard to you and your family.

So now that you can sail a small sailboat in your bathroom, you might be asking yourself, "what is the first step to cleaning up?".

Stop the Water

  • If the water continues to flow out, quickly shut off the water valve. Here is a quick tutorial on how and where to find the water valve in your bathroom.
  • Next, remove the lid to the toilet, push down on the circular rubber valve at the bottom of the toilet and lift up the float. This will stop any further water from entering the toilet bowl.

Dry the Standing Water

  • Quickly grab a mop or towels and remove all standing water. Fast action can prevent water from settling under the floor, into the walls, or cabinets. (If using towels, immediately wring out excess water into a bucket, put the used towels into the washing machine, use bleach or another detergent to disinfect them.)

Unclog the Toilet

  • The next step is to grab that faithful plunger and get to work. Make sure to remove any further dinosaur toys that may still be trying to take an afternoon swim. If the clog can't be freed from using a plunger or auger, it might be time to contact a licensed professional to help access the problem.

Remove the Waste Water

  • Grab the bucket of wastewater that you mopped up and (if the clog has been freed) pour it into the toilet. Flush the toilet. Make sure to clean the bucket with hot water, bleach, or other cleaning products that kill germs.

Clean the Bathroom

  • Make sure all germs and bacteria are killed when cleaning. We can do this by using bleach. Check out the family handyman website on how to safely use bleach to clean your bathroom.

Water damage restoration tips

Many unfortunate reasons lead to needing water damage restoration. From storms to appliances and broken pipes, while the solutions are as varied as the problems themself, there are a few things to consider regardless of the reason for the water damage. We always suggest hiring a Redding water damage restoration company, but if you are unable to, or until they arrive, here are a few water damage restoration tips.

Water types

One of the first things to consider is the type of water that needs to be cleaned up. When it comes to water damage restoration, water is categorized into 3 different types.

Clean water

Examples of clean water would be from a water line to your fridge, an overflowing bath, or a water line to your washer. This category carries no substantial chemicals or bacteria and is relatively safe to clean.

Grey Water

Examples of grey water would include overflows from dirty dishwater or water from an aquarium. This water carries substantial bacteria or chemicals and requires precaution while cleaning.

Black Water

Examples of black water would be a backed-up sewage line, or an overflowing toilet bowl containing feces. Flood water is also considered black water due to the higher possibility of bacteria and other biohazards that it may wash up.

Timely response

While water may cause immediate damage, allowing it to sit will only exacerbate the damage it may cause. As soon as you find water damage, you will want to call a professional water damage restoration company. As water sits and soaks in it can spread, and mold can set in as quickly as 24-48 hrs.

Ceilings first

Knowing where to begin can be overwhelming. It may be best to first look up and see if any of your ceilings have been affected. Water does a great job of deteriorating what it touches over time. If your ceiling has been affected, especially if it has stayed affected for some time, pieces may fall causing more damage to what may be beneath it.

Basement flooding causes

6/25/2021 (Permalink)

Basements are spaces that can be important to have. From workspaces to extra rooms and safety measures, basements are a valuable asset for many people. But what happens when such an important space gets flooded? As it is usually lower in level than the rest of your home, basements can be prone to flooding if not maintained properly. Here are some causes of basement flooding

Mice chewing on pipes

One of the more interesting ways a basement can flood is by having a pipe break, due to mice chewing on them. As obscure as this seems, it is actually more common than some would think! Mice have a very strong sense of smell and can actually smell the water in your pipes. When they get thirsty, they will do anything they can to drink, including chewing through pipes. Additionally, rat poison actually dehydrates mice causing them to look for water all the more. If this is a recurring issue, use alternate methods to get rid of mice, or try putting small bowls of water by your pipes so they will drink that instead of chewing through your pipes.

Sump pump failure

With basements being the lowest point in your home it can become notorious for collecting water. Sump pumps are designed to redirect water out of our basement, keeping it dry and usable. When sump pumps fail, it can be a disaster in the making. Some of the reasons for sump pump failure include

  • Failure to maintain
    • Sump pumps should be routinely maintained every 3-4 months. This helps to ensure it will continue to work properly, especially when you need it!
  • Clogged discharge pipes
    • It is natural for debris to gather, especially in spaces we don’t visit often. Debris can gather around your discharge pipes and begin to clog them. Installing a simple grate over your discharge pipe will help to keep the debris from clogging it.
  • Switch malfunction
    • In your sump pump is a switch that activates as it floats. Debris and items can cause this switch to get stuck causing it not to float and activate as needed. Be sure to regularly check your switch to make sure it is clear and able to float.

Overflowing gutters

Gutters that do not work properly can cause a variety of water damage issues. One of those issues can be a flooded basement. As gutters overflow, they can drain into your walls and make their way down to your basement. A very easy fix for this is to simply keep your gutter clear of leaves and other debris. Regularly check your gutters to keep them clear, and help to prevent water damage to your home.

What to do after a flood in your home

6/14/2021 (Permalink)

Graphic of a home under a flood For redding water damage restoration, contact us today! 530-222-0200

As a Redding water damage restoration company, we are innately aware of how little rain we receive, perhaps for those in Shasta County and the surrounding areas, the statement when it rains, it pours may carry a little different meaning! Although what still stands true is that the damage of disasters can often compound on itself. When not handled properly, water damage can lead to even greater problems in your home. Most people don't handle water damage restoration daily, so we wanted to offer some tips to help if you do!

Shut off the source

If possible, shut off the source of water before you do anything else. While in a rush, it's easy to miss some of the simple and most important actions. Shutting off the water at its source will help to stop the disaster from growing even larger.

Turn off circuit breakers

When we see a flood in our home, it is natural to act before thinking. We want to remove what has been damaged and save what can potentially be damaged. Before jumping into the water, be sure to shut off the main and each corresponding circuit breaker to your home to avoid electrocution.

Wood blocks and aluminum foil

Once the source is stopped, and it is safe to step into the flooded area, you will want to assess the damage and find ways to save your affected belongings. One of the actions you can take is to place Wood blocks and aluminum foil between furniture legs and wet carpeting. This will help to protect the legs of your furniture and help to prevent possible staining.

Get professional help as soon as possible

The longer that water damage sits, the more damage it can cause. Mold can begin growing, and you may soon need mold remediation as well. Be sure to contact a water damage restoration professional as quickly as possible. If water sits long enough, it can even begin seeping up the walls causing even more extensive damage. One important thing to note is that it's the water you don't see that causes the most damage.

Walking into your home or business and discovering a water disaster can be overwhelming. Often people are left confused about what to do or what actions to take. Here at SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties, our goal is to help not only restore property but also to restore peace of mind. Here are a few actions to take once you discover water damage in your home or business.

Get the air moving

Once the topical water has been removed, you will want to create good airflow through the room. Giving floors and personal items the optimal conditions to dry is key, and good airflow will do just that. Placing fans in the affected room, and ensuring airflow will help to remove the humidity from the room, allowing for better drying conditions.

Turn off the electrical supply

Electricity and water are a dangerous mixture of elements. Especially if there is any flooding, be sure to turn off the electricity to your home before entering the affected area. Find the breaker box to your home, and switch off the main breaker to your home, as well as the specific affected room. This will help to eliminate the danger of electrocution while entering the flooded area.

Quickly shut off the water source

This may seem like an obvious action, but statistics show a drastic decline in the damage incurred based on how quickly the water source is shut off. Instead of trying to first determine where the water is coming from, shut off your water altogether and devise a better plan to discover the source. It is very easy to get caught up in finding the source in the middle of the commotion rather than going directly to the shutoff, which will help the most to eliminate the damage.

We understand how difficult experiencing a disaster in your home or business can be. It is our hopes and effort to not only restore your property, but also your peace of mind. If you have experienced water damage, contact us today. We would love to help!

Water Damage Ceiling Repair Tips

Picture water damaged drywall with text If you have experienced water damage to your home or business, don't hesitate to contact us. We would love to help!

The ceiling is one of the most vital components to a building's comfort and safety.  In the US alone, there are an estimated 14,000 people that experience water damage daily. Much of this water damage affects the ceiling of a home or business. A broken or damaged ceiling allows for vulnerability in a home or business, but not to worry, prevention tips and repair are available!

Often, understanding the cause of a problem leads us to understand how to fix or prevent it. Some of the most prominent causes of water damage to a ceiling are a pipe burst, the age of a home, and roof leaks.

  • Pipe bursts
    • It is common to have water pipes run through your attic as it is the most simple way to supply your home with running water. As pipes age, they take on more wear and tear. This becomes problematic as the wear and tear happen to the pipes above your ceiling. Eventually, those pipes can burst, causing damage to your ceiling.
  • Aging home
    • As your home ages, its structure can shift. This can create cracks where water can leak into your home.
  • Roof leaks
    • Having a strong roof is essential to keeping your home safe. Weather and broken tree limbs can cause damage, allowing for water to leak in. There are also other roof leak causes such as ice dams to be aware of.

Early detection can have the greatest effect on the amount of damage that is caused. Often, it is in the small, insignificant events that build up over time that cause the greatest loss. A couple of great tips would include checking your water bill. If there is a significant shift in water usage, there's a chance you may have a problem. Another great way to detect would be to check your water meter, turn off all of your water sources for a period of time, then check the meter again. If the reading was not the same, it may be a sign of an undetected leak.

Tips for general water damage prevention

Here are some tips that can help prevent water damage for more than just your roof.

  1. Regularly check the hoses on your appliances
  2. Check the sump pump for your basement. Ensure it is working properly, especially as spring thaw and rain come.
  3. In snowy climates, check your roof for ice dams and use an ice dam rake to clear off your roof. Ice dams develop as the snow on the top of your roof melts, and re-freezes at the edges. This causes water build-up and eventual overflow into your home.

Water Damage From Improper Drainage

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded yard with Improper Drainage text If you have experienced water damage, don't hesitate to contact us. We would love to help!

Water damage for any reason can be one of the most frustrating situations anyone can deal with. From the time it takes to fix, to other damages it can cause, It’s safe to say nobody enjoys dealing with water damage. In some situations like improper drainage, there are telling signs that water damage may be on the horizon. Wouldn’t you like to know what they are? Well lucky for you, you are reading this blog! Keep reading to find out how you can identify problems with the drainage around your home.

Inconsistent Yard Growth

Grass, bushes, and flowers all require water to grow. When a specific area and type of plant growth exceeds its surrounding area and type, this is a good sign that water may be accumulating due to poor drainage. As this may not be the most urgent red flag, the closer that inconsistent growth is to your home, the stronger of an indicator it is that the flooding can affect your home.

Downspout Water Accumulation

Our gutters and downspouts should lead water away from our home. When they don’t, and heavy rain comes, the rainwater can seep into our foundation and cause water damage to our homes. A telling sign that our downspouts may need adjustment is if there is water accumulating underneath it. Typically a water spout should transfer water 4 feet away from your home. If water is expelling closer than 4 feet, it may be likely that water damage can happen.

Foundation Water Stains

Sometimes a problem doesn’t readily identify itself. In this case, discovering water stains on our foundation is evidence of areas that are flooding against your home. Proper landscaping should divert water away from your home, and a rule of thumb that many people use is to create a 2 percent slope from your home to your yard. Here is a great article for further reading on how much slope you may need, written by the Spruce.

As we continue into the winter months, rainy weather will definitely be upon us. Although we cannot, and most likely do not want to stop the rain from coming, there are things we can do to protect our property from damages it may cause. We may not be able to control each aspect of our circumstances, but we can take action to prepare for what most likely will come. Here are some tips to help prevent water damage from rain.

Make sure water drains away from your home or building

As time goes on, the terrain of your property may change. Although subtle, it may be enough to cause major water build up around your home. As rainy weather comes, it can accumulate around your home and even into your home, causing significant water damage. Making sure that water is draining away from your home or building is a significant way to help protect your home from water damage. Some solutions can require effort, while others may be more simple. Here is a great article on ways to help drain water away from your home.

Check for Leaky roof

A leaky roof is the last thing you want when it rains. Unfortunately, a leaky roof doesn’t present itself as clearly as other issues that can lead to damage. It seems as though it requires rain to detect a leak, but there are ways to check for a leaky roof before it causes bigger problems. Ultimately repairing your roof usually is necessary, but knowing the cause and where to fix it will ensure the problems won’t persist. Check out this link for helpful ways to identify a leaky roof.

Check and seal basement

For homes with basements, water damage in your basement can become a nuisance. Often there are different causes and reasons for water to leak into a basement, and the dark and damp nature of basements can make water damage even more prominent. Regularly checking your basement seals is a great start to ensuring you stay away from water leaking into your basement. Here are some more tips to help keep your basement dry.

Can Mice Cause Water Damage?

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

Graphic of mouse looking out of a mouse hole If you have experienced water damage, don't wait, call us today! 530-222-0200

There are many reasons why water damage can happen to a home including appliances, broken pipes, and weather. As with any damage, being prepared or knowing how to avoid it altogether is key. Some situations are more unexpected which can make it difficult to avoid. One of those situations we would like to shed some light on is how mice can cause water damage.

Sniffing out water

Mice have a highly developed sense of smell and can be drawn to the water inside of your pipes. Like any animal, mice get thirsty and will find any source they can to quench their thirst. This sense of smell can actually be used against them. There are certain smells that can help to repel a mouse. Some of these smells include peppermint oil, citronella oil, or castor oil. If you spread some of them in the area mice are infesting, you might find that them leaving for a more enjoyable environment!

Quench their thirst

As we stated, mice will find water wherever they need to, and often pipes can be the victim of their gnawing. Another great strategy is to give them what they are asking for! Many people have found it helpful to place bowls of water where mice may be prone to chewing through pipes. This will encourage mice to get water from a more readily available source and stay away from chewing on pipes to get it.

Rat poison dehydrates

It’s easy to want to reach for the rat poison to get rid of the problem altogether, but that may cause more problems than expected. Mice chew on pipes because they are thirsty. Rat poison causes dehydration which will cause the mice to search for water all the more. In the process of getting rid of the mice, this method may actually cause more damage. Instead, use mice traps to catch and get rid of the mice.

Water damage can become more costly the longer it goes untreated. If you have had water damage to your home or business, don’t wait to contact us. We would love to help!

Water Damage Tips

Man fixing a wall damaged by water If you are in need of water damage restoration, don't wait, call us today! 530-222-0200

The need for water damage restoration can come at the most inopportune times. Many jobs require professional help, and most are better left to trained technicians. In the case that you are unable to hire a trained professional, here are some tips to help with water damage restoration.

The difference in water types.

Water should be cleaned up as quickly as possible to prevent damages, but not all water is safe to clean without proper cleaning gear. Typically, in a water damage situation, water is categorized into three different types.

  1. Clean Water: This is the type of water the may come out of a broken water pipe or rainwater that may have seeped into your home.
  2. Grey Water: This is water that may have come from something like a dishwasher or a clean toilet. This water is slightly dirty and may require slight specialized treatment to maintain health.
  3. Black Water: Water that is considered black water should always be handled by a professional. This is water that has sewage and other waste in it. Black water contains bacteria and other contaminants and can cause serious health problems if not handled correctly.

Mold growth.

Water that sits for an extended time frame can cause mold. Once mold appears, it can grow and spread rapidly. Specifically, when not handled correctly, it can cause mold spores to spread throughout your home and create additional damages. Many people would think that bleach would be a great cleaner to use for mold, but it in-fact can cause mold to multiply. Use a vinegar solution instead to clean, if you are unable to have a professional remediate the mold.

Disconnect electronics in the area.

This one may seem to go without saying, but more often than some would imagine, in a rushed situation people tend to miss some of the more simple details. Water not only can damage your electronics but when electricity runs through water, it can be hazardous for you too. In some instances, an appliance that gets wet while plugged in can even cause a fire.

Water Damage Basement Flooding

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

Basement Flood Cleanup

There are many places water damage can occur, and many ways water damage can happen. From leaky roofs to faulty appliances, it is almost inevitable that homeowners and business owners will at some point have to deal with water damage restoration.

How water damage in a basement happens

With water being an essential part of our livelihood, there are many ways that a basement can become flooded and be affected by water damage.

Hydrostatic pressure

There are times the groundwater can rise, push against the foundation of your home. This can cause water to leak through cracks and openings of the concrete foundations.

Clogged gutters

If water is overflowing from your gutters, it may cause several water damage issues, including a flooded basement. The overflowing water can cause soil erosion, and lead to a cracked foundation.

A shorter downspout- When a downspout doesn't lead far enough away from your home the water can seep back into the ground to close to your home, and damage your foundation.

What to do when your basement floods

The longer you wait in any water damage situation, the more damage it can cause. Water is bad enough, but mold can set in quickly as well if the water is left to sit. Be sure to contact your insurance provider to make a claim, then contact a professional restoration company to fix the damage. There are many variables with water damage restoration, and if it is not handled properly, it could lead to a larger loss, and cost much more in the long run.

Common Causes of Water Damage

3/27/2020 (Permalink)

Broke water pipe For Water Damage Restoration contact us today! 530-222-0200

Water Damage is one of the last things a homeowner or business owner wants to deal with. Unfortunately, it is something that at one time or another may become a reality. Knowing what to do in those times is crucial to cutting down the damage and the cost of a disaster, but knowing common causes of water damage can help to stop it from ever happening! Here are some common causes of water damage to look out for.

HVAC Units

Moisture can build up in an air conditioner when they are not properly maintained. This moisture can turn into mold as the moisture sits inside of the unit. This is particularly hazardous as it can spread mold spores through as the air blows from the unit.

Household appliances

Many of our household appliances operate with the use of water lines. Over time these water lines get old and can deteriorate. Cracks and breaks can happen when they are not tended to. Pay particular attention to water tanks and washing machines as they are the most prone to cause water damage.

Indoor Sprinkler Systems

Sprinkler systems are great for commercial buildings to help suppress fire damage. Unfortunately, they potentially can create water damage if they break or malfunction. Regularly check your sprinkler system for rust or breakage, and replace them as needed.

Toilet Overflows

An overflow from a toilet may be one of the most common causes of water damage to a home or business. Drain lines can become clogged by products and waste, and main lines may become damaged by tree roots and other natural elements. Always check to make sure your toilet is flowing properly, and don't wait to get professional help if you suspect damage to your sewer lines.

Water Damage can be one of the biggest disasters a home can experience. Of course, water in itself is not a danger, but the longer the water sits, the more damage it causes. One of the keys to minimizing water damage is knowing the signs that it might be happening. Here are some signs to look for that may be telling of water damage.

Water Damage | Signs To Look For

A Bulge In Your Ceiling

As homes age, minor inconsistencies can happen, but a telling sign of water damage is a bulge in your ceiling. This happens when water soaks into your ceiling, which causes the materials to expand leaving a bulge. Also, water increases the weight of the ceiling causing it to sag in areas.

Baseboards Bulging

One of the most common, and easiest to notice signs of water damage is a bulge in your baseboards. Be sure to regularly look through your home at your baseboards to ensure your home doesn't need water damage restoration.

Humidity Change In A Room

Many times you can feel the humidity in a room change when enough water has been leaking. If you notice the air carrying more moisture, don't look past that sign as a coincidence. Be sure to check your home for possible water leaks.

Actual Water Pouring Out

This one goes without saying. If water is pouring out from a place it shouldn't, there is definitely a problem! Immediately shut off your water to prevent any further damage.

Water Damage Restoration-Misconceptions

Water damage restoration may seem like a simple process, but there are hidden dangers that can turn a small situation into a much larger project. Cleaning up water damage, if not done correctly, can lead to mold and a host of other problems that can be costly and hazardous to your health.

Water Damage Restoration Misconceptions

Restoration only requires that surfaces are dry

Absolutely, the surfaces need to be dry, but actions still need to be taken, even after the water damage to the surface has been cleaned up. Sanitization and application of an anti-fungicide are crucial to the process of eliminating the potential of other damages. Also, water can seep through cracks and damage walls, warp floors, and lead to mold if not cleaned up well.

It's not a priority

Although having a water overflow, or water damage checked right away may not seem like a necessity, waiting can perpetuate the possibility of mold growth. Often it's not the areas we see that will cause additional damage, but the areas that are not readily visible. Mold can begin to grow as quickly as 48 hours. Make sure you have a professional clean any water damage you have experienced

I can clean the sewage water in my home

Viruses, bacteria, and parasites are all dangers lurking in sewage water. Restoration professionals are trained to handle sewage water cleanup and eliminate the health risks accompanied with it. Sewage water cleanup may not be the most physically demanding job, but the health risks alone are worth it to hire professionals to get the job done!

Dishwasher For Water Damage Restoration, contact us today! 530-222-0200

Most people are surprised to hear our office is inundated with water damage restoration calls throughout the year. Generally, we associate water damages with flooding, snow, and tree damage. The truth is, most of the water damage is caused from within your home from items you use daily. Appliances.

Top 5 appliances that cause water damage

Water Heaters top our list! Recent studies from consumer reports and rainbow international show that 69% of water heaters fail because of a leak. We suggest flushing your water tank every 6 months but please don’t wait longer than a year. This will help remove sediment and prevent clogs from forming which may cause leaks later.

Refrigerators can have multiple ways of water damage, ice maker, water dispenser and condensation lines. These can usually be prevented by regular maintenance checks every year. Pull your refrigerator away from the wall and gently dust the back off. Check the water lines, they are the normal culprit for leaks. These lines can get cracks and have pinholes in them from the heat coming from behind the fridge.

Dishwashers have many components that can become compromised, switches, valves, and hoses. However, the number one reason for the majority of water damage is caused by too much detergent, or even the wrong type of detergent, causing the washer to become clogged and overflow. Please check your user manual if you are unsure of any operational procedures.

The washing machine's most commonpoint of failure is on the water hose. Sometimes an uneven load of laundry can make the whole machine unbalanced and pinching the hose spraying water everywhere. We would like to suggest a quarterly inspection on the hoses, checking for rust of fitting, cracking and leaving plenty of space between the wall and machine so the hoses won’t get pinched.

Air conditioners can offer great relief, but they can also create water damage in the entire home. Most of the water damage comes from the condensation lines, followed by a broken fitting. Having an annual maintenance check on your AC unit will help keep it from malfunctioning later.

If you need water damage restoration please don’t wait, call for help immediately. You’ve already experienced enough with water damage, the last thing you need to deal with is mold. Help prevent mold growth and call for guidance as soon as possible.

Water Damage Restoration Service

Water Damage On Kitchen Floor | Redding Restoration

The onset of water damage can happen quickly, and many times knowing what to do next, can be unclear. Further and more serious problems can occur if water damage restoration services are not applied quickly. Many times the amount of restoration needed can be affected by the action taken after a water emergency. Here are a few ways water damage can have secondary effects.

Standing water can cause illness.

Stagnant or standing water is a breeding ground for bacteria, parasites, and diseases. The longer it is standing, the more potential for risk. After sitting for 3 days, fresh or potable water becomes a category 2, which means it is slightly contaminated. After 7 days it becomes classified as a category 3, which is grossly contaminated.  In many instances, the source of water damage can be from a sewage pipe, which would increase the risk of illness.

Mold caused by moisture.

As states, Mold growth is encouraged by warm and humid conditions. Plainly stated, where there is mold, there has been water damage. Once mold sets in, it spreads quickly and makes for an unhealthy environment everywhere it is present.

Secondary moisture/humidity.

Most people do not realize how much the moisture from water damage can affect their household items. Warm and closed environments release moisture into the air. Enough built-up moisture can damage electronics, pictures, wallpaper, and many other household items.

The primary concern of our SERVPRO technicians is for your health and safety especially when mold growth is found.  When we first arrive at a water removal project in Redding, our IICRC water damage restoration certified crew chief secures the working area. Once again you, your loved ones, family and, of course, your pets are first concern.  We assess the damaged areas for water slip and fall dangers before any restoration procedures begin.

Our SERVPRO crew uses software technology to map out rooms and water damaged walls, ceilings and flooring to strategically position our state-of-the-art water extraction and drying equipment for the best possible moisture dryout locations.  Hardwood floors, in fact, are one of our specialties. Ongoing standing water can seep below wood seals and cause buckling and fractures.  Our truck-mounted extraction tools are specifically designed for hard surfaces.  We also use vacuum floor drying mats specifically for genuine hardwood installations.  Placed at each end of the room, our SERVPRO Injectidry System produces a constant flow of warm, circulating dry air ventilation underneath and through the hardwood floorboard “flutes”; small gaps into which each board is connected to another, creating an outlet on the other side of the room for the moist air to be sucked up into multiple high pressure vacuum hoses drawing out water lodged within the porous material.  Additionally, our dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air and our air movers propel water saturated air away from the damp floor speeding up the evaporation process.

Step 1:  Your Safety Comes First!

For example, when your basement is flooding you may be tempted to charge in to and stop the water.   Be advised that if the power is still on you could be electrocuted.  Additionally, flood water is automatically identified as Category 3.  That means sewage, toxins, and waste material could be flowing into your home.  Finally submerged sharp unseen objects like saws, tools and tables can cause personal injury.

Step 2:  CALL SERVPRO IMMEDIATELY!  530-222-0200

You need the best help you can get.  We have the training, experience and equipment necessary to STOP the water and lay out an immediate plan of action for moisture removal and drying.  Our team of professionals have successfully defeated bad water damage to the inside of homes on hundreds of Redding and Shasta County properties – commercial and residential.

Step 3:  We Begin the Flood Water Remediation Process

All excess water will be removed.  We bring in any necessary equipment like Air Scrubbers, HEPA Air Filters and Dehumidifers to reduce moisture and regulate air quality especially if mold is present.  Our SERVPRO technicians also remove damaged drywall, insulation, carpet and hard wood flooring, bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances to thoroughly mitigate any residual moisture in hidden areas.

Step 4:  A Plan of Action – Photos and Documentation

Your SERVPRO project manager will take photos and document every area of damage and clean up. Also your insurance company and adjuster will need proof of flood damage if they are going to write you a check.  A wise tip as a property owner is to have pictures of your home or business in a normal, undamaged condition to show pre-disaster structure and contents.

Step 5:  SERVPRO Can Salvage Wet Documents and Contents

Once all of the water damaged space is deemed safe and the contents are documented we usually are able to save, clean and restore most of a homeowner’s valuable personal possessions.  Family heirlooms, furniture, and especially water-logged personal documents and photos can be dried quickly to prevent further damage and mold growth.  We use a special SERVPRO state-of-the-art freeze-drying document restoration process to preserve the integrity of books, business documents and personal records.

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties is committed to you and your loved one’s safety and wellbeing.   We follow strict restoration industry IICRC standards to provide you and your insurance company with the fastest, safest and best water damage cleanup and removal available. Our team is your team and we are here for you.

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties uses IICRC water damage restoration standards incorporating advanced zone containment, air quality monitoring and moisture reading equipment to constantly measure and document the water extraction process.   Our Green SERVPRO trucks will arrive at your home and our expert trained professionals will set up strategically located air movers, dehumidifiers and if necessary HEPA filter equipped air scrubbers.   An experienced project manager will be on site to supervise and explain in detail any concerns a homeowner will have about water cleanup process.

YES.  As a matter of fact, here in the Redding, California and Shasta County area insurance agents and claims adjusters will ask you to call SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties immediately to stop continuing water damage as soon as possible and begin the cleanup and drying process.  Don’t call your insurance company first and then wait for an insurance claims adjuster to arrive.  Our goal is to immediately save your contents, decrease restoration costs and protect the walls, floors, roof and structure of your home.

Water cleanup and water repair is a several step process.

  1. The first step is to identify and remove all standing water from carpet, hardwood, laminate and tile flooring, wall paper and drywall. Fixing severe water damage intrusion may require the removal of drywall, carpet, flooring, cabinets, bathroom, toilet and shower fixtures as well as kitchen home appliances such as dishwashers, sinks and refrigerators.
  2. When water extraction is complete moisture drying dehumidifiers and a variety of highly advanced SERVPRO state-of-the-art equipment will be positioned in what we like to call “zones” in the home to target problem wet areas and effectively circulate air.
  3. Depending upon the severity, amount of water and the space of flooding damage this can take one or more days. All the while internal sensors in our equipment are recording moisture readings.  That moisture reading data is parsed by hand held mobile SERVPRO computers and charted to track job status in real time.
  4. Water in a home can also produce dank mildew odor especially within carpet padding, wet insulation inside walls and within sofa upholstery and cushions. Our SERVPRO technicians may introduce odor removal and deodorizing technology as well as immediate mold mitigation procedures to quickly address unsafe and potentially hazardous moisture conditions.
  5. When our SERVPRO production manager deems the process is complete, we do a final sweep with moisture monitoring meters and hand-held thermal imaging cameras (if necessary) to absolutely make certain lingering water is gone and your home and belongings are thoroughly dry.

Mitigation” as understood is “to identify and take the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something”. Under this definition, as a premiere SERVPRO franchise and preferred choice among Redding property owners, insurance and real estate agents in Northern California; mitigating water and mold damage is at the core of our insistence upon customer service excellence and timely fast around-the-clock response times!

  1. Thus, SERVPRO home water damage mitigation usually includes some degree of wall, ceiling, roof or floor demolition before cleaning and drying out the structure and belongings. For most one to two story single-family homes this phase usually requires no more that 3 – 4 days.
  2. Repair, restore and rebuild, based on the depth of damage, can take longer. Shasta County typically has a long lead time for rebuilds that require new building permits.  Redding area contractors are time crunched post-fire seasons.   The order time of required building and construction materials such as drywall, lumber, fittings, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, insulation and other materials such as carpeting, cabinets and flooring can be unpredictable.  All of that to say this: Your SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties assigned project manager will work closely with you and your insurance company to outline a detailed scope-of-work and completion timeline for your mitigation and repair requirements.   Our primary concern is that you, your family, loved ones and pets along with furnishings and contents are restored to a healthy and happy home environment.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) provides a specific set of standards for fixing water damage. We hold and are maintain current training in the coveted IICRC S500, water damage repair certification.

Several factors determine costs.   The size and area of the property flooded.  The time and equipment required to quickly extract and dry water to minimize damage.  Insurance adjuster claims process is generally unknown.  SERVPRO works with both homeowners and insurance companies to reduce expense and save and restore as much as possible. Our goal is to target the source of loss and mitigate continuing structural damage and prevent toxic mold growth.

Clean water – Always potable.  Before the water hits the ground, someone should be able to drink it.

Gray water – Possible harm or illness to persons.  Example would be washing machine, sink or dishwasher overflow. Containing chemicals, soap, and considered unpotable.

Black water – Extreme harm to persons.   Sewage, petroleum products, oil, gasoline, within the water as well as raw sewage, blood, bacteria, virus and others biological toxins.

The rule of thumb is that where there is water there is a very good chance for mold.  Dark, dank and moisture rich environments provide the perfect biological ecosystem for toxic black mold infestations to quickly grow.  Humidity and temperature can cause mold to grow in 24 to 48 hours.

Redding Home Water Damage

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

Water Leaking in Your House? Call Us Immediately at 530-222-0200. Serving Redding, Red Bluff, Mt. Shasta, Yreka, Weed and surrounding areas.

Home water damage is largely hidden.

Residential fire, water, mold and storm, rain and flood emergency repair and clean up restoration services provided by Redding California SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties trained professionals is a testament to the fact that most property owners discover water problems too late.  Much could have been prevented.

** GOOD NEWS -  We are here at 530-222-0200 all the time day or night to respond quickly!

Water pipes and faucet fixtures under kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, behind showers, sheet rock and along internal wall spaces leak, freeze, drip, burst and allow moisture to secretly build up in as-yet-undiscovered spots only to awaken a property owner when the signs appear – mold, paint bubbles, sagging wet walls, dank musty mildew odor and, of course, visible layers of water gravitating to a home’s lowest point.  Carpeting, toilet fixtures, vinyl and hardwood floors retain moisture in the climate-controlled ecosystem of modern home HVAC systems providing a perfect breeding ground for greater toxic problems like mold spores on clothes.

Water flooding can occur from old and under-maintained dishwashers, water heaters, swamp coolers and toilets.  Plumbing pipes running through the second story wall and floor space create greater problems, often, destroying lower story ceilings and floors producing discoloration and soaking into carpeting and home furnishings in bedrooms.  Different colors appear, perhaps yellowish or brown along with water bubbles in peeling and cracking paint and wallpaper stains.

Water Repair People

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties

Kitchen and bathroom floors, whether vinyl or hardwood, even in the best of conditions are usually high-traffic spill areas inviting puddle accumulation.  When a pipe ruptures sections already weakened by ongoing foot-traffic exhibit changes in texture such as warping, buckling, curling and in worst-case scenarios the above-foundation floor begins to sink from wet floor joists and structural supports.  Hardwood floors besides changing shape also suck up water into the wood pores to swell and expand.

Keep in mind as well that when you think of water related damage issues you typically don’t think of fire.  Soot and ash certainly, however, a great deal of residential moisture damage insurance claims are the result of firefighting efforts; high pressure water and chemical foam used to extinguish the flames.

Our professional and trained technicians rush drying equipment and odor neutralizers to your home or apartment to prevent further water damage and begin cleaning all types of moisture and plumbing disasters in your home.  We also clean up mold.  Fast air drying and circulation is critical to stopping further damage.

Your possessions and contents are treasured items.  We have a page that describes SERVPRO’s detailed water damage restoration process called “Caring For Your Belongings”.   Also, our ongoing Blog page, among Redding, Shasta County and Northern California home owners is a popular destination for water damage information related to fire, mold, and storm damage.   Many area residents in recent days who visit our site have enjoyed our article entitled Apartments in Redding, California and Winter Water Damage.  Especially during our current stormy weather we are taking calls for water leaks and indoor flooding.

Apartments in Redding, California and Winter Water Damage

Apartment Water Damage from Winter Rain and Storms? Call SERVPRO Now! 530-222-0200 Redding, California

Shasta County Commercial Property, Multi-Unit Housing and SERVPRO Water Damage Emergency Cleanup

Landlords and property managers are frontline providers of housing to our local communities.  The residential properties they own and manage are, of necessity, expected to be maintained at an acceptable level of health and safety.   Many times, we here at SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties are called out to provide fast water extraction drying to a premise’s floors, walls and ceiling because of an unexpected sudden rain water leak or broken shower pipe flood pouring into the sheetrock and insulation of a tenant’s apartment or condominium.

Winter snow, ice and wet freezing rain can hit hard during these extreme weather seasons.  Windows and doors require proper weather stripping to prevent water leaks and seepage.  But that is only the first step of protection from outside moisture.  Examine the tightness of your exterior doors.  Check the fidelity and structural soundness of rain gutters and your apartment complex roofs to ensure tenant water damage property protection.

Outside areas also include the necessity for properly sloped landscape and parking lot water drainage intakes cleared of seasonal debris accumulation.  Slip-and-fall safety and prevention is the key because proper signage, effective water runoff, slip resistant walkway matting all reduces liability insurance claims because tenants have a safe pathway to vehicles, common areas, event rooms, laundry and workout areas.

Rain gutters and drain spouts, often, quite high on the edge of multi-story, multi-unit commercial housing complexes are easy to miss during seasonal maintenance checkups.  Water back up and leaking through cracks into the walls and hidden areas of adjoining units creates hidden damage to multiple adjoining apartment units.  That is when the problems really begin because not only is there water damage, but the wet and untreated surfaces allow preexisting mold spores to thrive and grow.

Everyone likes shade, especially during the scorching heat of Redding summer days.  Large trees with bushy overhanging branches look great in the hot afternoon.  However, when winter storms strike those same trees with their aging untrimmed and brittle branches are waiting to fall upon roofs, gutters, eves, carports and possibly a tenant. Also, utility power lines and telephone poles, by themselves are dangerous enough during strong winter wind and rain storms.  When those same lines, over time, become embedded in the branches of uncleared brush and tree limbs the situation becomes exponentially more dangerous for resident safety and opens the door to extensive property and structural damage.

Because SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties has over two decades of water, mold and fire damage clean up and restoration to just about every apartment complex from Weed, Yreka, Mt. Shasta and Red Bluff we are intimately familiar with how to quickly scale our experts and resources for any type of inside or outside property damage.   We have also had the opportunity to develop close working relationships with many well-known local insurance agents and adjusters

You need the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile!

An extraordinary benefit of having SERVPRO on your side is that we provide a **FREE onsite disaster preparedness assessment aptly named the Emergency Ready Profile.   The ERP is a preexisting report (available on Apple or Android mobile devices) specifically outlining the phone numbers of first responders, property managers, photos and location information of key gas, electric and water shut off locations on your property.  In a nutshell, the ERP provides peace of mind that SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties has your back – day and night.

Visible water loss is only the tip of the iceberg. Carpet, tile cracks and holes in the wall, loose hardwood flooring, concrete; these all suck in water to flooring mats and drywall. An important first step in any water loss emergency is to identify the source (class) and pollution (category) of water.  Based on that inspection, our technicians create a water restoration plan for your property, explain the process, and answer your questions. SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties works with your insurance company every step of the way.

Water Damage Source Classes and Pollution Categories

Water is identified in the restoration industry in two ways.   1.  Where is the source and what is the saturation level of the water?  2.  What type of water is coming from the source?

  • Class 1 Water – A slow evaporation rate typically from a drip or slight water line break. Seepage only affects part of a room or space, carpeting is slightly damp.  The key is low permeance rate of surface materials that come into contact with moisture like plywood or concrete.
  • Class 2 Water - With a fast evaporation rate. Water at this level would affect an entire room including carpeting and furniture cushioning. Moisture will have soaked into structural materials and wall up to 12’
  • Class 3 Water - This class has the fastest evaporation rate, and ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, and sub-floors are all saturated. The liquid may have come from overhead.
  • Class 4 Water - This class is used for special drying situations. The sheer quantity of water combined with time allow for saturation to occur in materials that retain water such as hardwood, brick or stone.

Categories of Water Contamination

The situation worsens as water becomes more polluted. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classifies water into three categories in its S500 Standard:

  • Category 1: “Clean Water” - Generally sanitary water – This category includes water that comes from sources that we would consider to be potable or drinkable under normal circumstances such as from burst water pipes, broken supply lines on appliances, or falling rainwater. Category 1 water because it is open to outside conditions becomes increasingly contaminated as it mixes with ground soil or floor coverings and structural materials like subflooring, walls and decks. Time and temperature, of course, cause water to become a welcome breeding ground for bacteria and microorganisms.
  • Category 2: “Grey Water” - Significantly contaminated water – Water which is recognized as already having some degree of preexisting contamination. Once again, the pollution triangle is water, time and temperature as the state of the water becomes worsened.
  • Category 3: “Black Water” - Grossly contaminated water - Water which is highly contaminated. Examples would be flood water from overflowing banks of rivers and streams flowing over industrial chemical and toxic waste, ground water flooding into homes and, of course, broken and open flows of sewage.

Our goal is to whenever possible save and restore your water damaged household belongings.

We will work with you and your insurance company, agent and adjuster determine what is salvageable and restorable.  Items to be restored are carefully, stabilized and packed by SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties inventory specialists to facilitate the cleaning of individual contents.   Our document drying process, in fact, uses a “freeze dried” methodology to stop any further moisture damage and save important and irreplaceable documents.

Water Extraction

Water extraction is a strategic and highly scientific process initiated by our on-site emergency technicians to quickly stop any further water damage at the source and begin the restoration process.  We match our extraction process to the specific category and class of water and the types of water affected building materials. Removing standing water in visible and hidden areas is only the first piece of the extraction puzzle.  Water evaporates and fills the internal air space with moisture and also mold spores and bad odor.  We calculate the number and strategically place throughout the home or business SERVPRO HEPA air cleaners and dehumidification equipment as necessary to completely sanitize and purify both surfaces and air.

Moisture Drying and Monitoring Water Removal

We follow an IICRC “Standard of Care”.  Which means that our drying equipment is monitored and remains in place until the water damaged property has be dried to a recognized industry standard.  When SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties quickly arrives on-site a project lead takes the helm and maintains oversite of daily moisture readings of relative humidity and variations in levels of structural moisture to make a determination of complete water damage restoration.  Using advanced moisture reading technology our SERVPRO professional will make necessary adjustments to equipment settings to maximize drying at the fastest speed possible.

Water Loss and Preventing Mold

The key to reducing mold growth is fast water drying. Our state-of-the-art drying techniques are trusted restoration industry best practices for successfully creating a drying system that maintains balanced moisture reduction, airflow increase and optimizes temperature.  Introducing into this process an odor cleaner and sanitizing microbial agent produces the clean and fresh surfaces and air quality that SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties is known through the Redding and Northern California region for achieving.

How Water Damages a Redding, California Home

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Can Occur Suddenly! SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties offers world-class emergency water damage clean up!

Modern Shasta County homes that retain heat also retain humidity and moisture from water leaks in the structure.  Moisture leads to mold which leads to toxic indoor air quality particularly within the closed-loop of residential heating and air conditioning systems (HVAC).

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties professionals are well equipped experts at handling every component of a water leak flooding event.

  1. Rain Water

Chimney flashing, unsecured roof shingles, clogged flat roof drainage and rain gutters collect water.  Pulled by gravity the moisture seeps into attic and insulation areas onto ceilings and down walls. Heavy wind during Northern California storms pushes water into unsealed spaces.  Doors and windows provide likely rain water access to not only openings and cracks but also into the heated air space of a residential living area.

  1. Plumbing Water Leaks

A toilet water line ages and breaks releasing water into the carpet, tile or linoleum flooring.  Shower pipes release water into the bathroom drywall.   Our SERVPRO technicians see these types of plumbing failure often.  Regular homeowner maintenance on bathroom plumbing fixtures, many times, prevents unexpected catastrophic flooding especially during a property owners absence like a vacation.

We at SERVPRO take water leaks and intrusion very seriously!  Phone us night or day at (530) 222-0200.  The goal of our fast response is to stop the damage to you home and property.

  1. Foundation water drainage, loose door and window flashing

Unseen water damage and moisture buildup produces seasonal effects.  Heat allows unevaporated water to produce mold and mildew.  Winter cold produces frost and ice expansion of structural components.  For example, the glass seal on a window unit can fail from contraction and expansion.  All structures, new homes and old homes experience some level of water damage somewhere.

  1. Air Leaks

Moist humid air finds a path into attic roofing hatches and many other random structural gaps.  Many homeowners are not aware that even a small air gap, over time, can accumulate vast amounts of residual water vapor creating a nourishing dark environment for mold and fungus growth.  Because attic air leaks are hidden the damage is revealed much later than an obvious leaking toilet resulting in a different degree of damage.

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties has the drying, cleaning and sanitizing experience and equipment necessary to effectively mitigate any degree of catastrophic to minor water loss.

  1. Vapor Diffusion

A home’s walls are made of several different layers of material.  Masonry, stucco or fiber cement siding usually make up the first layer of exposure to outside rain and storm water.  These materials become saturated with rain which seeps into the unseen interior layers of plastic vapor barriers, drywall and internal vinyl wallpaper and latex paint.  When the sun comes out the warm temperatures push accumulated moisture inward.

Water leak floods the floor to this piano. Call us at (530) 222-0200 for your water damage emergency.

Water Damage in Redding, CA and Shasta County occurs in many forms.

Safety is your first concern for your loved ones, family, employees, yourself and home or business property.  Flooding occurs in many forms; heavy rain pouring in through an unknown weakness or leak in your roof, a frozen or old broken water pipe and certainly what we don’t think about on the other side of water damage is the extinguishing of a structure fire and the resulting acidic-soot slurry produced by the soaking and wetting-down of every last piece of the building to quench any remaining embers. The step after safety is assessing the damage.  SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties is on scene and by your side from the beginning.  We work closely with your insurance claims agent and adjuster to quickly take restorative action.

Water and Property Destruction

We are all familiar with the phrase, “Too Much of a Good Thing”.  Certainly, this applies to water.   Too much of this essential life-giving substance, at the wrong time, in the wrong place and in the wrong quantity – can take life and destroy property.

The following list outlines the points of awareness.

Wallboard and drywall: Usually the first point of contact for leaking water is the chalk based dry sponge of your bathroom or kitchen wall attached to the floor. Sucking up and consuming water, expanding, tearing and sometimes requiring immediate removal and drying the inner wall area of studs and insulation.

Plaster, Insulation and Solid Wood:  All building compounds inside home and commercial businesses that under normal conditions remain dry.  Once again, these materials are porous becoming repositories for incoming flooding, loosening, stretching, requiring fast removal.

Particle Board:  Particularly dangerous is the glue and chemicals used to construct this material like formaldehyde.  Laying dormant these chemicals react to moisture and just like water hitting the fire ash, the residue of commercially manufactured lumber releasing the wet toxic water breaks down the structural composition.   Points to ponder.

Carpets and laminated floor coverings: wet foam padding and carpeting will have to be pulled up and away from the drywall.  Tile and linoleum flooring, along with accompanying grout and industrial glue will sometimes need to be scraped and pulled up, oftentimes, to remove the wet toxic putty of industrial glue and installation sealants.  Because we arrive fast we can, many times, completely save, dryout, clean and restore to a “Like it never even happened” condition much of the carpeting especially individual area rugs (also keep in mind our professional home and business carpet cleaning services).

Your safety and property are at stake.   We take care of every step in the process – water extraction, drying, mold remediation, cleaning and sanitizing.  SERVPRO experts are your first line of defense when these unexpected water emergencies occur.  We are a well-respected and known restoration service provider in the City of Redding, Shasta County, and throughout much of the California North State.  We have an extensive track record (look at our Google reviews online) of upholding standards of quality and professionalism that get results and build trust.  Your trust!

Flooding from Storm Damage and Heavy Rains

Northern California has experienced many unusual severe weather events.  Heavy rainfall can erode the foundation of a building. Intense rain storms, especially in the Shasta Basin, which for many months of the year does not experience rain, can quickly become forces of nature, destructive and powerful, that produce flash floods, and seepage into the interior of unprotected homes causing extensive property damage.  SERVPRO takes your safety and property value seriously.  When something goes wrong we are prepared and you will have our help.

Basement Water Heaters and Pipes

Basements below ground level without proper drainage precautions become the collection point for rain water runoff, roof drainage, sump pump malfunction and home upper floor broken water pipes; all pouring into the lowest point.  Our local Redding SERVPRO professionals are highly trained experts at getting to the source of the damage and quickly removing water from your basement by bringing in our extraction and water drying equipment to minimize damage.  We also provide pack-out, cleaning and preservation services for your furniture and possessions.

Sewer Backups

Sewer backups not only lead to flooding but are dangerous. Biohazard pathogens are released into living areas from gray- or black-water contamination causing infection and serious illness (link to CDC here) Sewer blockage flooding is considered an emergency and must be dealt with immediately. SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties keeps experienced “on-call” technicians ready to immediately respond.  They will inspect your home for contamination and provide state-of-the-art sanitization solutions., as well as extract and dry out toxic water. Our equipment and specialized training will ensure that the problem is solved with maximum safety and speed.

Home Appliance Water Leaks and Pipes

A homeowner leaves for a few days on vacation and their plumbing pipes or connection to the dishwasher, bathtub, toiled, sink or faucet breaks leaving an unattended flow of water damage to the wall boards and drywall, the carpet and flooring well beyond the loss location into adjacent hallways, living areas and bedrooms. When your faucet, tub, water heater, or other appliance leaks, the results can vary from annoying to devastating. Water that builds up on a floor can make its way inside, collecting in hard-to-reach places. Extensive wood damage and mold contamination result. SERVPRO’s mission for fast response is to partner with homeowners and their insurance agents to save property quickly and reduce insurance claims.

 Fire Department Water Runoff

Fire season in Redding and Shasta County is real and potentially catastrophic.  If firefighters are called to extinguish a blaze on your property the water from their firehoses will drench every square inch of your home’s interior and exterior surfaces flooding through the roof, attic, insulation and wood surfaces and into carpeting, padding and personal papers, books and belongings. The resulting water damage could, in fact, be worse than the fire itself. We simultaneously deal with both the runoff water damage and the remaining fire, smoke and soot residue.  We also provide compete odor removal and interior cleaning.

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties has the expertise to fully restore your home to a “Like it never even happened” condition.

Water Damage Repair, Clean Up and Restoration

Water Damage Drying and Restoration - SERVPRO

Water damage can be understood in three ways.

Category 1 is sanitary or potable water.  Category 2 contains contamination from a water supply line break or pipe break.  Category 3 water is any water that has touched the ground and enters a structure such as storm and flood runoff or sewage.  Damage restoration within any one of these categories involves a multi-step process.   When home or business owners attempt to clean up and “fix” the water problem unseen problems develop such as incomplete drying, hidden areas of contamination and the untreated structural supports holding mold and the resulting toxic air and mildew.  Contacting SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties at (530) 222-0200, your local Redding and Shasta County expert, is in fact, the first step toward effectively mitigating your flooded home or business.

Water Damage Assessment

Certified and trained technicians come out to the flooded home or business to assess damage and determine the immediacy of restorative actions.   Knowing what to look for, asking the right questions and executing an immediate plan of action both with safety and preservation in mind is one of the key differentiator’s that makes our SERVPRO brand a cut above the rest.

Water and Moisture Clean Up

The next step is water extraction.  We have at our disposal an extensive array of state of the art water removal and drying technologies to take on even the most formidable storm, flood and in-home water disasters.  This step – the extraction and removal of water is critical.  Not only is speed important but knowing the toxicity and composition of the water itself for health and occupant safety to properly remove the possibility of lingering biohazard but also the growth of mold.

Drying and Dehumidification

The industry standard for a typical water damage event dry out is three to five days.  Your situation, of course, may be different.  The point is doing it quickly, properly and safely to achieve a balance of result for you as the property owner and also for your insurance agent of your commercial or home owners policy.   Watch our hard wood floor drying video on our SERVPRO website to see an excellent drying technology demonstration from our technician.

Cleaning and Sanitization

After drying the final stage before reconstruction is to thoroughly sanitize the interior structural spaces, remove and kill microorganisms and prevent further growth as well as clean spores and toxins from the air and remove any remaining bad odors.

Flood Water Damage Insurance Regulations for Commercial and Residential Property Owners

10/12/2017 (Permalink)

Flood in Redding home Flood damage restoration expert tips - from the front lines of experience

Rain Storms and Flooding - Disaster Education - NFIP and FEMA

Shasta County Winter water damage from storms and rains are fast approaching. Property owners and managers should be aware of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and how it works with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the case of floods and the resulting damage caused. Flood waters, whether they are from rising rivers and streams or rainwater, can cause flooding resulting in damage to property. If water touches the ground and enters any structure, it is considered flood water, which is not covered by regular or commercial insurance policies.

These flood waters are considered Category 3, which is highly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents from sewage, silt, and debris this can cause significantly adverse reactions to humans when consumed, or when in contact with the CAT3 water. This can create civil liability and as of January 1, 2017 cause substandard housing issues if the damage, such as mold after flooding, is not dealt with correctly.

With NFIP policies in place, which is on a county by county basis or if the county or state declares an emergency in an affected flood area, it is possible that FEMA could pay the flood claims. These policies have very specific restrictions on all FEMA/NFIP claims. The 2017 FEMA rules and regulations are as follows, and are subject to change on a yearly basis:

Water damage clean-up service providers must provide a complete drying log for every day of the process with the invoice. This includes Hygroscopic readings, that show how much moisture is in the air and atmosphere. Also, daily measurements of any materials being dried such as structural wood, cabinets and some flooring that does not require removal such as vinyl composition tile (VCT) when it is undamaged. If logs are not provided, these line items will be rejected and NOT covered by FEMA/NFIP.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT pay for drying gear that is placed prior to all demolition being complete. Once all porous materials have been removed, then drying equipment will be allowed.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover water extraction from wet carpet. It is less heavy for restoration technicians to lift and remove extracted lost carpet.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover air scrubbers and Ozone machines. These machines remove a variety of odors and airborne contaminates caused by animals, cigarette smoke, mold and mildew, or fire and water damage. What is pertinent to flood claims are airborne E Coli, giardia, or similar pathogens.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover content manipulation charges, such as removal of household furniture. A good way to judge the contents of a house versus the structure: If you could turn your house upside-down and shake it, whatever falls out is considered contents, whatever is bolted, nailed, or screwed in place, such as cabinets, are considered part of the structure. NFIP does have content coverage policies, but most of these have a separate deductible.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover equipment cleaning charges. The EPA, OSHA, and IICRC industry standards require the cleaning and sanitizing of all equipment used during a CAT3 flood damage restoration.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover generators needed to run restoration equipment, such as dehumidifiers and air movers. Many flood situations are followed by power outages due to the nature of the flooding, either by the force of it or due to the power company cutting the power for safety reasons. By the time that demolition is complete the power is usually on in time to set the gear for the structural drying process.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover the costs of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) even though this is required by OSHA. This includes Tyvek suits and respirators, which are essential for the safety of restoration technicians to reduce or eliminate exposure to harmful chemicals and mold.

  • FEMA/NFIP does NOT cover secondary damage. An example of secondary damage: Two feet of water in your home creating elevated humidity levels that absorb into hydroscopic materials causing damage like sagging or collapsing ceilings from damp, heavy dry wall.

As stated previously, these rules and regulations change on a year-to-year basis. If you have flood damaged property you can go online to:

Current information and a list of counties covered is found at:

Please feel free to contact me for any questions or comments: Doug Stephens, franchise owner: SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties at (530) 222-0200.

This information is provided so property owners do not get blind-sided when receiving the bill from a flood loss. If you are aware of the restrictions involved with FEMA/NFIP claims, you can negotiate or perform some of these services yourself.

Here’s a brief look at what procedures are involved in our water restoration services:

  • Water Removal: The restoration process begins with pumping out excess water.
  • Deodorization: Foul odors can be eliminated by applying techniques such as ozone treatment, crystals, dry fogging, and wet fogging. The materials and equipment for these techniques are only available to professional water restoration service companies.
  • Mold and Mildew Removal: To achieve long-term results, this procedure must be performed by an expert restoration services provider. Using scientific technology, technicians can kill and remove developing mold and mildew.
  • Drying and Dehumidifying: These processes are necessary to remove moisture in the air and on walls, floors etc.
  • Content Restoration: This procedure involves cleaning, deodorizing and disinfecting clothing, draperies, furnishings, beds, mattresses, carpets, sofas etc. These items can be successfully restored, but prompt action must be taken because harmful microbes, mildew and mold grow very fast in a damp environment.
  • Decontamination: Water restoration services also decontaminate and clean any items that are restorable, and dispose of those that are not.

Water-Damaged Carpet Is Ripe for Mold Growth

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Wet carpet in Redding home Water soaked carpet is ripe for mold growth.

Carpet is at high risk of mold growth.

For mold to grow, it needs oxygen, moisture, a surface to grow on, and a food source. Spores are commonly found in the air. If they land on damp or wet spots indoors, they feed on dust, and mold growth will occur very soon.

(530) 222-0200

In the right conditions, area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting provide a perfect breeding ground for mold. Carpet located below ground level in basements, as well as carpet that’s been wet for a period of time, and moist or damp carpeting, are at especially high risk of mold growth.

Just because mold is not immediately visible or apparent on carpeting doesn’t mean that growth is not in progress. Actually, mold is likely to only be visible on the surface of carpeting in severe infestations – as would commonly occur when the carpet has remained wet for some time after flooding.

Carpeting that has been subjected to flood damage or standing water usually needs to be disposed of because conditions are ripe for mold growth. Even if visible growth has not yet started, it’s highly probable that it will happen unless the carpeting is removed, cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours. Even then, removing it and cleaning it is not guaranteed to prevent mold growth.

At SERVPRO North Shasta, Trinity, & Greater Tehama Counties we offer 24/7 emergency house restoration services on mold, storm, smoke, fire and flood damage, as well as vandalism or any other disaster that may strike your home.

A key point to remember with home insurance is that the insurance is for emergency disasters and not to repair damage caused by negligence or lack of maintenance.

Water Damage Prevention

8/25/2017 (Permalink)

Flooded home in Redding Water Damage occurs in the most unexpected places!

Water Damage Prevention

Water damage can lead to wood rot, peeling paint, insect infestation, shorter lifespan of roofing and siding increasing maintenance cost.

Rainwater and Snowmelt - Water Damage Prevention

Windows/Doors: Check for leaks around your windows and doors, paying extra attention near the corners. Peeling paint could be signs of water getting into the wood.  Discolored paint or caulking, swelling of the window or door frame could be signs of water damage.

Roof: Repair or replace shingles around any area that allows water to penetrate the roof sheathing. Leaks will most commonly be found around chimneys, plumbing vents and attic vents. To find the source of a ceiling leak, measure its location from the nearest outside wall and then locate this point in the attic using a measuring tape. Water may run along the attic floor, rafters, or truss for quite a distance before coming through the ceiling.

Foundation and Exterior Walls: Seal any cracks and holes in external walls, joints, and foundations.

Plumbing: Check for leaking faucets and dripping or "sweating" pipes. Inspect washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks or wetness. Replace them every few years or sooner if problems are found. Inspect the water heater for signs of rust or water on the floor.

Landscaping: Keep trees trimmed so that branches are  7 feet away from any exterior house surface. This will help prolong the life of your siding and roof and prevent insects from entering your home from the tree. Vines growing on the side of a home can help open cracks in the siding, which allows moisture the house. If water damage does occur, you can minimize the damage by addressing the problem quickly. If water is flowing into the home from burst piping or damaged appliances, shut off the water supply,  found outside the house or at the meter.

Restoration Response: Fire vs. Water

8/4/2016 (Permalink)

Fire damage restoration and water damage restoration are two very different types of jobs, so it’s no surprise that they need to be approached by the responding restorers accordingly.

Now that’s not to say that the two types of jobs don’t also have similarities. For instance, in a residential setting, there’s the issue of containment, inspection to determine the scope of the work about to be done, and being empathetic with potentially distraught homeowners. But here’s a look at some of the big differences between the two approaches:

Fire: Safety is key when responding to a fire job, so it’s important to first secure the property. Then, emergency board-up can commence and the project can begin. Appropriate items should be packed out and taken off site for contents cleaning, while crews can start ridding the property of soot and smoke odors and preparing for demolition and reconstruction, if necessary.

Water: When responding to a water loss, the first step is to extract any remaining standing water from the property. If water levels have receded, then contents should be packed out of the affected area and drying equipment should be brought in. In the case of Category 2 or Category 3 water, however, carpet and carpet padding will likely need to be removed and disposed of and any impacted drywall will also need to be cut out.

As you can see, responding to fire and water is different. But there’s one big similarity between the two that’s worth highlighting—empathizing with the homeowner. Remember, these are people who can be very fragile after an unexpected home disaster. So work with them, consider what they feel is “the most important thing” to take care of after a loss and do your best to accommodate their wishes. Whether it’s fire or water, the homeowner’s immediate needs should always be taken seriously.

CALL SERVPRO… We are water damage restoration specialists and are ready to restore your Redding home back to pre-water damage condition. We quickly extract the water and then dry your property using state-of-the-art equipment. Basement Flooding: Redding, CA Prevention & Action Guide

8/4/2016 (Permalink)

This basement flood was caused due to heavy rains in Redding, CA

Basement flooding can occur at any time, especially in the spring, when snow melts and spring storms begin. Flooding can occur even in dry weather due to unexpected blockages to the sewer system around your home. Here is a list of basic things you should know about basement flooding:

Preventing basement floods

-  Clean your roof’s gutters and downspouts and divert rainwater 6 feet away from the house

-  Install an automatic emergency generator to provide your house with electricity during blackouts

-  Install a sump pump that automatically drains water from your basement and prevents water from rising

-  Seal openings or cracks in the walls, floors, foundations and windows of your house

-  Install porous pavement around your home to help absorb rainwater and thawed snow

-  Ensure that your drainage systems and plumbing are functioning properly

When you experience basement flooding

Tackling the flood cleanup yourself is not recommended, so keep the number of a water damage specialist on hand (SERVPRO professionals are available 24/7/365). While you’re waiting:

- Shut off electrical power and don’t walk through floodwater to avoid electrocution

- Don’t expose yourself to flood water contaminants but, if you must, wear protective gear

-  If you have a sump pump installed, wait for it to drain the floodwater as soon as electricity can be safely restored

-  Carpets and upholstery must be dried out immediately. If they have been wet for more than 48 hours they should be thrown away. So don’t delay calling your water damage specialists!

In order to determine the full extent of the damages caused by water, fire/smoke, mold, and other disasters, call your local SERVPRO office. These professionals provide full restoration services in compliance with industry standards and best practices.

How Do I Protect Hardwood Floors from Water Damage?

8/4/2016 (Permalink)

Water is the biggest enemy of hardwood floors. After a flood, your best chance of recovering your hardwood floor is to hire a professional restoration company immediately. However, failing to protect your floor from moisture or spills on a daily basis can also cause irremediable damage. Here is what you can do to keep your hardwood floor dry and undamaged:

  • Remove wet, moist or damp items, such as carpets, clothes, boots or appliances, from the floor as fast as possible.
  • Wipe up any spills from the surface of the hardwood floor immediately to prevent the liquid from penetrating the floor.
  • If a room with hardwood floor has an exterior door, place a rug in front of the door.
  • Inspect the plumbing and fix any leaks that could cause water to leak into the floor (or any structural component for that matter).
  • Control the humidity in your home. Be aware that during the summer, air tends to be moister and during the winter, the air is dryer than usual. Both moist and dry air can affect wood, so adjust your humidifier accordingly.
  • Reinforce the sealant on your hardwood floor periodically. Wax sealants should be refinished annually. Polyurethane sealants (oil or water based) last longer and only require maintenance every few years.
  • When cleaning hardwood floors, use a quality product intended specifically for hardwood floors. Make sure you don’t leave pools or puddles of liquid, no matter how small, on your floor. Don’t soak the mop head or the cloth you are using; instead, only dampen them a little.

The Different Types of Floods

8/4/2016 (Permalink)

Floods are the most common natural disasters and cause billions of dollars’ worth of damage every year. Even if you don’t live in a high-risk flood zone, there is still a chance that flooding can affect your property. Below you can read more about different flood categories to help you understand your own risk:

1. Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall causes a fast rise of rapid-moving water that sweeps everything in its path. They usually cover a relatively small area and occur with little to no notice, generally less than 6 hours. The rapid water torrents can move large objects, such as cars, rocks and trees.

2. Coastal floods are caused by strong winds or storms that move towards a coast during high tide. When powerful waves breach the coast’s dune or dike, the area will be flooded. Coastal areas with fewer defenses and lower elevation are the most affected. The best time to repair the breach is during low tide.

3. River floods are characterized by gradual riverbank overflows caused by extensive rainfall over an extended period of time. The areas covered by river floods depend on the size of the river and the amount of rainfall. River floods rarely result in loss of lives but can cause immense economic damage.

4. Urban floods occur when the drainage system in a city or town fails to absorb the water from heavy rain. The lack of natural drainage in an urban area can also contribute to flooding. Water flows out into the street, making driving through it very dangerous. Although water levels can be just a few inches deep, urban floods can cause significant structural damage.

5. Pluvial floods form in flat areas where the terrain can’t absorb the rainwater, causing puddles and ponds to appear. Pluvial flooding is like urban flooding, only that it occurs mostly in rural areas. The agricultural activities and properties in areas where pluvial floods have occurred can be seriously affected.
