Among the commonly unknown questions asked is what type of water damage insurance will cover. It’s important to remember that insurance types and coverage can differ, but some general coverage applies to most homeowners. Here’s a series of questions and answers homeowners commonly have regarding water damage and their insurance.

Q: I had a pipe freeze and burst, it is now seeping into my home, will the damage be covered?

A: Unintentional and accidental damage caused by plumbing is generally covered. This includes faulty plumbing, frozen pipes, and unintentional overflow.



Q: The water line in my fridge broke and water spilled all over my kitchen. Would this type of damage be covered?

A: Typically, the damage will be covered but the source of the damage such as a dishwasher or refrigerator will not be. 

Q: My neighborhood suddenly flooded from a backed-up drain, and the water flooded my home. Would my homeowner's insurance cover this?

A:  General homeowners insurance typically wouldn’t cover water backup from an outside source, although you are able to purchase insurance that would include water backup coverage.



Q:  Water began leaking into my bedroom and I realized it was coming through my roof. What would be covered in this situation?

A: The damage to your room and any other interior area of your home affected by the water normally is covered. The roof itself is not usually covered by general homeowners insurance.
