A Flood Damage Cleanup and Restoration Checklist

A recent “supercell” rainstorm hit hard homes and businesses in our neighboring Butte County and especially the City of Chico.  Northern California has certainly had its fair share of snow, wind and rain this year!  As a trusted Redding SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama franchise our water and flood damage restoration expertise is often called upon to provide regional assistance.

Flooding creates a new type of stress among residents.  Unlike fire the structure is not burned.  In the case of flood water intrusion, the structure itself soaks up moisture in walls, ceilings, floors, contents and home furnishings.  Many homeowners may panic and ask, “What do I do now?”  The following tips provide some answers.

Step 1:  Your Safety Comes First!

For example, when your basement is flooding you may be tempted to charge in to and stop the water.   Be advised that if the power is still on you could be electrocuted.  Additionally, flood water is automatically identified as Category 3.  That means sewage, toxins, and waste material could be flowing into your home.  Finally submerged sharp unseen objects like saws, tools and tables can cause personal injury.

Step 2:  CALL SERVPRO IMMEDIATELY!  530-222-0200

You need the best help you can get.  We have the training, experience and equipment necessary to STOP the water and lay out an immediate plan of action for moisture removal and drying.  Our team of professionals have successfully defeated bad water damage to the inside of homes on hundreds of Redding and Shasta County properties – commercial and residential.

Step 3:  We Begin the Flood Water Remediation Process

All excess water will be removed.  We bring in any necessary equipment like Air Scrubbers, HEPA Air Filters and Dehumidifers to reduce moisture and regulate air quality especially if mold is present.  Our SERVPRO technicians also remove damaged drywall, insulation, carpet and hard wood flooring, bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances to thoroughly mitigate any residual moisture in hidden areas.

Step 4:  A Plan of Action – Photos and Documentation

Your SERVPRO project manager will take photos and document every area of damage and clean up. Also your insurance company and adjuster will need proof of flood damage if they are going to write you a check.  A wise tip as a property owner is to have pictures of your home or business in a normal, undamaged condition to show pre-disaster structure and contents.

Step 5:  SERVPRO Can Salvage Wet Documents and Contents

Once all of the water damaged space is deemed safe and the contents are documented we usually are able to save, clean and restore most of a homeowner’s valuable personal possessions.  Family heirlooms, furniture, and especially water-logged personal documents and photos can be dried quickly to prevent further damage and mold growth.  We use a special SERVPRO state-of-the-art freeze-drying document restoration process to preserve the integrity of books, business documents and personal records.

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties is committed to you and your loved one’s safety and wellbeing.   We follow strict restoration industry IICRC standards to provide you and your insurance company with the fastest, safest and best water damage cleanup and removal available.
