Common Causes of Water Damage

Water Damage is one of the last things a homeowner or business owner wants to deal with. Unfortunately, it is something that at one time or another may become a reality. Knowing what to do in those times is crucial to cutting down the damage and the cost of a disaster, but knowing common causes of water damage can help to stop it from ever happening! Here are some common causes of water damage to look out for.
HVAC Units
Moisture can build up in an air conditioner when they are not properly maintained. This moisture can turn into mold as the moisture sits inside of the unit. This is particularly hazardous as it can spread mold spores through as the air blows from the unit.
Household appliances
Many of our household appliances operate with the use of water lines. Over time these water lines get old and can deteriorate. Cracks and breaks can happen when they are not tended to. Pay particular attention to water tanks and washing machines as they are the most prone to cause water damage.
Indoor Sprinkler Systems
Sprinkler systems are great for commercial buildings to help suppress fire damage. Unfortunately, they potentially can create water damage if they break or malfunction. Regularly check your sprinkler system for rust or breakage, and replace them as needed.
Toilet Overflows
An overflow from a toilet may be one of the most common causes of water damage to a home or business. Drain lines can become clogged by products and waste, and main lines may become damaged by tree roots and other natural elements. Always check to make sure your toilet is flowing properly, and don't wait to get professional help if you suspect damage to your sewer lines.
