How can I Remove Dog Urine Odor from Carpet?

2/10/2022 (Permalink)

Baby talking to dog about how clean the floor smells in Shasta County, California

Spring is upon us and those beautiful Northern California sunny days are beginning to fill our weekly calendar. An itch for something new is starting to create dreams of a new neighborhood, yard, and house. The question forms in your mind, HOW DO I GET MY HOUSE READY TO PUT ON THE MARKET? You glance around your house, and the memories begin to unfold. The unique crayon drawings from your 2-year-old Picasso on the walls, Uncle Larry's famous trip down the stairs with a wine glass in tow, and let's not forget your family's ultimate Christmas present this year, the family dog! THE DOG!! All those failed attempts of potty training your new fido begin to lengthen your to-do list for preparing your carpet. There is no need to fret, we got you covered. Here are a few tips to get those unwanted pet stains out of your carpet; and make them smell fresher than a newborn baby.

(Well, maybe not exactly, but you get the point.)

How to remove pet urine on carpet?

New Urine Stains

  • With new urine stains, quickly absorb the liquid as soon as possible.
  • You can do this by placing a stack of paper towels and applying pressure to the wet stain.
  • Allow the paper towels to absorb most / all of the urine, then rinse the area with cold water.
  • Crystallization can occur if the urine is not removed and could cause further damage in the future.

Clean the Stain

  • There are several enzymatic cleaners that can be used to clean the soiled spot.
  • Check out Family handyman's list of top reviews for enzymatic cleaners.
  • White vinegar is a great household item you can use as well. How to apply and use vinegar.

Remove and Neutralize Pet Odor from the Carpet

  • Baking soda is a natural dry deodorizer that is great for neutralizing smells and odors out of your carpet.  Lightly spread the baking soda over the damp spot, letting the baking soda sit overnight, and then vacuum your carpet thoroughly.

Treat your Subfloor

  • If you are preparing to put your house on the market and feel like the flooring needs to be replaced, it's important to remember that pet urine stains need to be cleaned effectively before replacing the new floor.  This will keep mold and other bacteria from growing and causing more severe issues in the future.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning Services

Ground-in dirt and grime wreak havoc on business carpet installations.  Discoloration and buried filth in the carpet fibers contain dirt, bacteria, hair, allergens and dust mites.  Miniscule contaminants not only grind down carpet fibers but also pollute office air.  Carpets act as a type of air filter.  The dirtier the carpet the filtheir the air.

SERVPRO as one of the industry’s oldest and most trusted carpet cleaners is your partner when you invest in our commercial cleaning services.  Professional and certified technicians deep-cleaning your carpets with our state of the art equipment.  We follow manufacture and warranty guidelines during the deep-down contaminant extraction process. Our carpet technicians, using vehicle mounted carpet cleaning system to specifically match a carpet treatment for your specific needs.  Multi-level commercial buildings require the use of our portable extractor with recovery tanks, vacuum and solution hoses and quiet operation.

Redding, CA - Fire, Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Dangers

Fire, Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Dangers

Fire is dangerous. We all know that. But, did you know that the flames themselves might not be the greatest risk as far as health dangers and property damage? Fire smoke is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a three-to-one ratio. And while direct exposure to smoke is harmful to your respiratory system, it can also negatively affect your property’s structure, sometimes in unexpected ways.

Smoke from any type of fire is comprised of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and soot. Depending on what’s burning, many other harmful chemicals also enter the air, and are inhaled into your lungs or latch onto walls, furniture, clothing, ductwork, and other areas.

When it comes to your property, knowing how temperature, the surrounding environment, particle ionization, and airflow patterns affect smoke distribution can help you better restore your property to normal.

Heat pushes the soot, the by-product of incomplete combustion, and can cover everything in its path.  Smoke seeks a sort of equilibrium; it travels until its energy has been used up and travels to cooler temperatures. Soot, when tested, is always found to be on the acidic side of the pH scale.  Acidic materials are destructive to most elements in nature. Acidity over time continues to degrade most metals by etching and oxidizing leading to discoloration, pitting or corrosion of the substrate. Finish coatings (paint) over metals are often yellowed and softened and will fail over time because they cannot stand the harsh acidic environment.  These acid soot residues have ongoing reactions until removed. Smoke is magnetically charged and contains metals which act as path to short circuits and as an insulators causing overheating of components.

Smoke Damage Removal

Is it time to sell or rent your house but the odor from cigarettes or cigars is offensive to others?

This home in Redding, CA needed to have cigarette residue and smoke odors removed after 25 years of smoking in the home. The cabinet handles were covered in residue until our cleaning crew came in and worked hard using our specialty cleaning and deodorizing products on hard surfaces including the walls.  Pictured is a close up showing a cleaned handle and cabinet above the uncleaned handle and cabinet.

Removing cigarette smoke residue after many years of smoking requires specialty cleaning products such as counteractants that help permanently remove odors and cleaning agents that breakdown the residue along with hard work from our technicians.

In severe cases like this one, we typically recommend that the carpet and padding be removed because they hold odors like a filter would.  If window coverings can't be washed or dry cleaned, then we recommend they be removed.

Crime Scene Clean Up Not For Everyone

3/7/2017 (Permalink)

I came across this article at CNN.com and it does a great job explaining why some people shouldn’t be in the crime scene cleaning business and why you need tough skin to be a crime scene cleaner. Not only to deal with the sights but the family of the deceased. I had a family stand outside an apartment in San Antonio and wanted to see what I was putting in the incineration boxes. They actually wanted to sift through the box of bio-hazard waste to make sure we didn’t toss anything. It just is incredible the way families can act when their loved one passes. People stand outside of terrible crime scenes and fight over who gets what about things that really don’t matter, like lamps. We always take our time to bag important items for the family. There is an emotional switch you have to turn on and off especially when this happens. I often think of the victims and their families during and after the clean-up. But at the end of the day it is nice to know that I helped start their healing process. That is why I continue to clean up crime scenes and that is why I feel it is rewarding.
