Winter is still here, and so is the threat of winter storms. Being prepared for the unknown can keep your house, car, and most importantly, your family safe.  

With circumstances deteriorating fast and temperatures dropping below freezing, everyone is potentially at risk during a winter storm. Long-term exposure to low temperatures can quickly cause frostbite, hyperthermia, and potentially death.

70% of all winter deaths occur in automobiles and 20% inside of homes.

Here is a quick guide and checklist to make sure you are ready and prepared for anything the next Shasta County winter storm throws at you. 

  1. Monitor the National Weather Service Forecast
  2. Familiarize Yourself with Winter Weather Terms. 
    1. Check out Weather.gov for a detailed list of terms and their definitions. 
  3. Winterize your home
    1. Check caulking around windows
    2. Install storm doors
    3. Add extra insulation or weather-stripping around windows and doors. 
  1. Gather Supplies and Create Winter Storm Kits for your House and Car.  

Home Winter Storm Supply List:

  • Water 
  • The RedCross encourages one gallon per person per day. 
  • Nonperishable Food Items: Dry cereal, nuts, peanut butter, protein bars, bottled or canned juice, tuna, beans, fruit, etc. 
  • Flashlight
  • Extra Batteries 
  • First Aid Kit
  • Battery-powered or hand-cranked Radio
  • Warm coats, blankets, gloves mittens, hats for all household members
  • Sand, rocks, or non-clumping kitty litter for ice-covered walkways or 
  • Driveways.
  • Extra Baby Supplies: Formula, Diapers, Baby food.

  • Battery Cables
  • Ice Scraper
  • Flashlight
  • Cell Phone Charger
  • Simple Tool Kit
  • Sand, rocks, or non-clumping kitty litter
  • Foldable Shovel
  • Fix-a-Flat
  • Blanket
