Recently, the middle of our country experienced a devastating storm with tornado coverage across four states. In the North State, heavy storms are not a common occurrence. Although when they happen, they can cause significant damage. Here are 3 of the biggest storms our area has experienced.

The great flood of 1862

In 1862, Shasta County experienced the worst storm in its recorded history. This particular event spanned across Oregon, Nevada, and California. Weeks of continuous rain started in November and lasted through January. Record rainfall occurred from January 9th through the 12th. California specifically experienced 10 feet of rain and snow over 43 days. The damage today would have been the equivalent of 3.117 billion dollars.

Mount Shasta snow storm of 1959

This event was the largest snowfall from a single storm in North America. It accumulated 189 inches of snow. Thankfully, the brunt of the snowfall affected unpopulated areas. Much of the surrounding towns were so used to and prepared for snowfall that it left towns and people virtually unaffected.

Redding snowmageddon of 2019

Redding went through two years with no snow. Then in 2019, we experienced what many people called snowmageddon! It was the biggest snowstorm since 1968, with a snow accumulation of up to 14 inches. This storm left 20,000 residents without power, and the Shasta County Sheriff declared a state of emergency.
