Cleaning up after a fire can be a daunting task. The emotions of having your belongings damaged along with the confusion from the chaos of fire damage can leave you overwhelmed and at a loss for what to do. Fire damage restoration should always be handled with caution and by professionals, but there are some activities to consider doing quickly, and ways to safely manage the activities you can do. Here are some tips on fire damage cleanup.

Board up and secure your home

One of the first things to consider with fire damage restoration is having your property boarded up. Often windows can be broken, and other unwanted entryways can open into your home after a fire. These entryways can allow pests and looters into your home and add to the damage of your property. The board-up process should be performed with proper instruction, or by a professional, as it can damage the exterior of your home when not performed correctly.

Wear an N-95 mask

As our homes continue to contain more petroleum-based products, carcinogens released from burning become more of a threat. Wearing an N95 grade or higher mask will help to protect from harmful carcinogens, and other possible chemicals released into the air. Protective clothing and gloves should also be worn while cleaning and salvaging your property after fire damage.

Do not use electric or gas

Fire damage to a home or business can affect more than the exterior or noticeable parts of your building. When performing fire damage restoration, we are always cautious about the internal or structural damage that can be caused, and you should be as well. Using electricity or gas can be dangerous as things may have shifted or even broken, leaving electric wires exposed, or gas expelling in ways you may not want. Always turn off gas and electricity before re-entering a building to clean up after a fire.

If you have experienced fire damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to contact us. We would love to help!
