According to the NOAA, storm damages accounted for over 90 billion dollars in damages last year. Although the weather can not be controlled, our hopes are that we can offer tips and activities that can help to minimize the damage. Those tips first start with understanding how damages happen.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damage

Some feel that lightning and thunder are beautiful things while others dread the events. One thing is for sure, lightning and thunder carry tremendous power and can cause significant damage. According to redding.com In 2020 there were over 500 fires started by lightning in California alone. If lightning and thunderstorms are predicted, be sure to take precautions as you would for any other fire prevention

Hail

Hail develops from water freezing in the upper parts of a cloud. The size of an average hailstone ranges from 1-2 inches. Large hailstones can grow up to 6 inches in diameter and weigh up to a pound. No matter the size of hail, a hail storm can cause significant damage, especially to your roof and siding. Nrc4help.com has a great article about the factors that cause hail damage that include hail size, hail density, and building material.

Wind damage

Wind gusts between 50-60 mph can cause damage to trees and powerlines. As wind speeds increase from a storm, the damages become significantly higher. Although high winds are not extremely common in this part of the country, we did recently have a tornado touchdown in Tehama county. This goes to show that it is important to be prepared, even for events that may not be as common. A couple of great tips are to use storm shutters to protect your windows and reinforce your garage doors. Fema.gov has a great list of prevention activities to follow in the event of a storm.
