Defensible Space Preventing Fire Damage
7/8/2020 (Permalink)

There have been 2,996 fires in CA to date, amassing over 19,951 acres. Fire season is upon us, and it’s a well-known fact in our area that preparedness is the key. There are many actions to take and ways to keep safe during the fire season, but one of the most effective ways to prevent fire damage is to create a defensible space around your home. Defensible space is an area around your home that will help to minimize the fire damage to your home. Here is some helpful information on creating a defensible space!
Ignition Zones
The ignition zone is separated into three parts, and encompass an area that is 100 feet around your home. The reason for this is that as the fire heats up, it can ignite combustible material up to 100 feet away. Click here for a link to fema.gov for in-depth detail on all three zones.
Fire-Resistant Landscaping
When it comes to fire prevention, it may seem like the best idea to clear all shrubs and greenery around your home. In-fact, having plants strategically placed around your home will provide for a better deterrent. Often a wildfire builds during windy conditions, and embers from the fire can travel along with the wind. Having fire-resistant landscaping can block the embers from ever reaching your home, preventing your home from catching on fire.
Vertical and horizontal spacing
Having proper vertical and horizontal spacing between your trees will minimize the fire passing between the trees on your property. Without proper vertical space, the fire can travel from the ground up to the trees. It is recommended to have at least 6 feet of space between the ground and the branches of your trees. Similarly, without proper horizontal space, a fire can spread from tree to tree. Horizontal space takes into consideration the hight of the trees or shrubs and the slope of the ground.
