Storm Damage Restoration Flood Awareness
2/27/2020 (Permalink)
The Month of March is flood awareness month. Storms can cause damage unexpectedly, but being prepared beforehand can help to minimize the need for storm damage restoration. What many people may not be aware of is that urbanized areas can be more prone to flooding. Highways, driveways, and parking lots do not allow for rain to absorb into the ground and increases the chance for flooding.
Conversely, mountainous areas May be prone to flooding as well. Steep hills lead to fast runoff, which causes water to rise quickly. Much like urban materials, rocks and clay soils make is harder for water to absorb into the ground.
Flood Damage Prevention Tips
Exterior Precaution
Be sure to elevate or protect machinery on the ground. Outdoor furniture and valuable loose items should be moved inside. Any item that is unable to be moved inside should be anchored down. Even heavy objects can be washed away by floodwaters.
In cases of extreme flooding, floodgates, sandbags, and tarps are a great idea to install.
Interior Precaution
If the water seems to be rising high enough to reach outlets, shut off your electrical service. Remove any rugs or materials that will hold water, this will reduce the risk of mold or mildew. All office electronics and important documents should be elevated to ensure valuable documents won't be damaged.
