Arson - Can It Be Prevented?

The summer of 2018 seemed to be a never-ending siege of fire. While most of our community in Shasta County was just starting recovery from the Carr fire there were suddenly many arsonists setting fires to businesses, homes, and fields. SERVPRO® of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties want to help educate our community with tips for prevention.
The U.S. has just over 30,000 fire departments. 1,800 are professional departments that protect about 44% of the population. 23,000 are strictly volunteer departments and protect nearly 24% of the population. While the rest are blended, both volunteer and professional fire fighters. America has one of the highest per capita arson rates in the world. Reported by the National Institute of Restoration arson is the main cause of fires in commercial building and the second for residential fires.
SECURITY TIPS AGAINST ARSON:
Awareness: Inform employees about the importance of reporting strange behavior of customers or passersby's.
Lock Your Doors and Windows: Make a note of who has keys and access to your property. Do not allow any unauthorized individuals access to your property. Create an adequate lockdown method when your business closes at the end of its shift. Most criminals like "soft targets", secure your business to prevent arsonists from having access to it.
Keep it Clean: Eliminate trash buildup around your building. Trim or remove bushes and shrubs that may block visibility to your property.
Choose a Fire and Burglar Alarm Systems: Have a fire or burglar alarm that is linked directly to your law enforcement agency and fire hall.
Buildings' Exterior: Security cameras and motion lighting can often be enough to deter criminals away from your business.
Arson fires reported to U.S. fire departments exceed 260,000 per year. That includes over 1,300 civilian injuries and almost 450 deaths, plus arson brings property damage total to 1 billion dollars.
