Storm Damage and the Redding, CA Fire Season

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

Uncleared downed trees and brush from winter storms can dry in the hot Redding summer heat and become fuel for WildFires!

Don’t forget that fallen trees and branches from winter storms lead to hot dry vegetation during Shasta County Summer fire season.

Redding, California and Shasta County are approaching the hot days of summer.  Mountain towns like McCloud, Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir, Burney, Weaverville, and Hayfork are located in backcountry elevations where cold and hot air mix to produce those summer thunder and lightning storms.  Dime size hail, winds in excess of 30 mph, frequent lightning and locally heavy rain produce unexpected severe thunderstorm warnings.   Redding is at the northern tip of what is known as the NORTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY SURFACE MOISTURE CONVERGENCE ZONE.   Ringed with mountains, Redding sits at the center of the northern geological narrowing of terrain accumulating weather system pressure build up.  Thunderstorms can develop particularly in the evening hours if there is sufficient moisture and instability.  All of this is to say that storm damage is possible anytime and anywhere.

Heavy rainfall and storms in Northern California can be thought of in two ways.

  • The immediate effect from high wind storms creates downed tree limbs, power line failure and immediate property damage on roof and building structures.  Water flooding on poorly sloped and graded surface areas around residential foundations creates basement flooding and water leaking into living spaces.
  • Plant vegetation, tree limbs and scattered debris left after the storm passes along with new plant growth from winter rain fall creates, in the spring and summer, an accumulated tinderbox of combustible dry fuel waiting for a spark on a blistering hot Redding afternoon.

SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties understands all these dangers.  Our many years helping North State residents with water and fire damage to homes and businesses has made us a valuable restoration provider. Storms can bring a wide range of immediate property damage as well as unexpected future catastrophic damage from uncleared dried and hot lingering debris aftermath of seasonal rain and floods.
