During late February and early March in Redding and the lower elevations of Shasta and North State counties are experiencing an unexpected Winter blast bringing high winds and large accumulations of snow. Cold weather extremes and freezing temperature drops cause pipes to freeze and burst. Ice accumulation in roof gutters and eaves melts and refreezes creating unexpected water damage to shingles, crawl spaces damaging structural integrity. Current alerts from the National Weather Service include the following:
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, with localized amounts greater than 16 inches possible above 5000 feet.
* WHERE...Western Siskiyou County, South Central Siskiyou County and North Central and Southeast Siskiyou County above 3000 ft. The Mt Shasta City area, Black Butte Summit, Highway 89, Scott
Mt. Summit, and Greyback road.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible, including during the morning commute. Significant reductions in visibility are possible. Blowing snow will also be possible in the Black Butte Summit area and on Highway 89.
Caltrans warns motorists to check their brakes, tires and windshield wipers, and make sure their vehicle's defroster, heater and exhaust system are in good condition.
Make sure vehicles have plenty of antifreeze. Caltrans suggests drivers add special solvent to their windshield-washer reservoir to prevent icing. Also make sure your tires have good tread for icy and wet conditions. Also fill your tank with gas before travelling. Avoid traveling and remain home if possible. Caltrans also recommends motorists take water, food, warm blankets and extra clothing in case of long delays.

During our winter storms frost and freezes the sheltered lower elevations will have colder temperatures and longer duration freezing conditions than the thermal belt areas of west Redding. This occurs when a polar or arctic air mass moves southwestward from central Canada into Northern California. The air mass is very cold and dry and these events are usually accompanied by strong north to northeast winds. The chilly winds of the last week in February in effect eliminate the thermal belt of Shasta Basin.
