4 STEPS TO GET YOU READY FOR NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH.

9/7/2023 (Permalink)

Storm Damage in Redding CA

September marks the beginning of National Preparedness Month, along with school starting, new schedules, and getting little sleep. September can be a crazy whirlwind of figuring out new rhythms, which is why it's so important to remind ourselves to take time out of our busy schedules and get prepared!

National Preparedness Month brings awareness to all communities, especially those in underserved communities. Being prepared for emergencies or disasters might seem a little gloomy, but when it comes to those who are a little older, have small children, or are even owners of rascally-loving pets, having a plan could save lives.

Every life is worth saving and protecting. Help your family and friends stay safe by following some of these easy steps to get prepared.

Knowing what disasters affect your city can help you understand what supplies you need, what rules to follow, and when and if you need to evacuate.

  • Plan how to communicate with family and friends.

How can you check your loved ones are safe and informed?

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)s - are emergency messages from authorized state, local, tribal, and territorial public authorities. These alerts can prepare you for severe weather, from The National Weather Service, or even prepare you for a nationwide disaster with a message from the President of the United States. If you are not receiving these alerts on your phone, try following these troubleshooting steps by ready.gov.

Weather Alert Radio - Purchasing a weather alert radio can give you access to weather-related alerts, and some brands can receive emergency-band alerts automatically without you having to tune in. Need a gift idea for grandma or grandpa this year, try the Midland ER310 which does all of the above!

  • Plan your Evacuation route.

With Northern California being prone to wildfires and floods, it's essential to have several routes mapped out to get your family to safety. In the event of a disaster or emergency, local authorities will often give directions or announce road closures, so make sure to follow their guidance.

We know emergencies or disasters don't always give us time to prepare, but a good reminder and rule of thumb to live by is to have a half tank of gas in your car at all times.

*Have an elderly parent or grandparent, during the next visit, check how much gas they have in their car!

  • Build an Emergency Kit - To-Go Bag

Inside your bag might include a flashlight, extra batteries, a storm radio, a cuddle buddy (for younger children), a blanket, water, and non-perishable snacks. For more information on what to pack, check out this checklist
