The weather is cooling down in Redding, Shasta County, and the surrounding areas, and we are transitioning our activities indoors. While getting out of the cold is needed, our activity indoors can create the potential for fire damage in your home or business. Often it is the little things we overlook and take for granted that can ignite a fire. Here are 3 tips to prevent an indoor fire

Surge Protector

Forty-seven thousand electrical fires are reported annually. Many of them happen from an electrical surge. Each appliance needs a certain amount of electricity, and if the electricity needed is more than the wall plug can give, then an electrical fire has the potential to start. Often this happens when multiple appliances are plugged into the same wall plug. A great way to help lower the risk, and promote electrical safety, is to use a surge protector when needing multiple appliances at once. 

Smoke Detector

According to the NFPA, Forty-one percent of annual fire deaths in property were attributed to not having a smoke alarm. Many of you may have heard about the Kidde smoke detectors recalled, which points to the importance of checking your smoke detector. It may seem like a simple task, but proper function can greatly minimize the damage and possibly save a life.

Appliance Maintainance 

Appliance fires caused by malfunctions are the highest from November to February. That accounts for 39% of fires annually. The colder months are upon us, and it may be a good idea to check the appliances we use most. Space heaters and appliances with a heating element should be maintained before use for the winter.
