In our recent string of wildfires, it was reported that the smoke has traveled over 1,500 miles and seen as far as Kansas. This incredible feat happens due to the small size of smoke particles, and the accumulation of multiple fires burning at the same time. These accumulated smoke particles travel high into the atmosphere, a mile above the earth’s surface, and travel across the country. Gray skies are usually the only event experienced from this, though there are times that jet streams can force these smoke particles down into the air closer to the surface, and cause a change in the air quality. Closer to home, where the fires are burning, these smoke particles can be more problematic.

How smoke can affect you

Much closer to home, we have experienced a week where the sun was all but blocked by the smoke. The multiple fires in our area have caused unhealthy and smokey air. The AQI or air quality index normally should range between 0-50. In perspective, our AQI for most of these smokey days ranged between 150-200. At the range, finding solutions for breathing clean air, within your home or business, would be a good idea to consider.

What you can do to clear the air

While we can’t control the amount of smoke released in the air, we can take some steps to protect our own health. It is best to stay indoors when the air is this bad, but wearing an N95 or P100 mask can help while you are outside. epa.gov has a great article on this! Staying indoors certainly is the best option, but sometimes the air is so bad that machines like air scrubbers should be used. During the Carr Fire, and this fire season, SERVPRO of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties has had the honor of helping the animal at Turtle Bay stay healthy! Here is a video of how we have helped during the Carr fire.

Here To Help
